We recently reported that Life on Air’s new iOS app Meerkat was attracting a large number of Twitter users interested in broadcasting live, temporary video. Twitter has since restricted Meerkat from using some of its tools, including the ability to pull info about a user’s follower base (important to Meerkat users for locating their existing friends). Speaking at South By Southwest in Austin over the weekend, Life on Air CEO Ben Rubin said Twitter’s move has motivated him to speed up the development of new features for Meerkat. The Audio Engineering Society has published its AES69-2015 standard to address the evolving field of 3D audio. The new standard offers a framework for binaural technologies (growing in popularity due largely to the increase of headphone use with smartphones and tablets) and 3D personal audio. Developed in AES Standards Working Group SC-02-08, it defines a file format to exchange acoustic data in multiple forms, including head-related transfer functions (HRTF) and directional room impulse responses (DRIR). YouTube has made some compelling new changes in the last week. The video site just announced the launch of its “Cards” system, which is designed to eventually supplant annotations. The company also announced its new site, “YouTube for Artists,” essentially a resource guide for music artists promoting their work on YouTube. In addition, YouTube now supports 360-degree video formats in most of its mobile and Internet platforms, a move the company promised earlier in the year to address the growing interest in virtual reality content. Disney/ABC Television Group and Yahoo have announced a partnership extension that will integrate each other’s content across various properties. Clips from popular ABC series (including “Scandal,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “Dancing with the Stars”) will be accessible via Yahoo Screen and Yahoo TV, while different segments of “Good Morning America” will feature content from Yahoo’s digital magazines and properties such as Flickr and Tumblr. Verizon announced its plans to rollout Internet TV channels featuring original content from teen-centric AwesomenessTV, the YouTube network owned by DreamWorks Animation. The companies announced yesterday that scripted and unscripted series will be geared toward teens and millennials. The multi-year deal will also include a DreamWorksTV channel that features live action and animated short-form content based on popular DreamWorks’ characters. According to comScore, 10 percent of Internet users in the U.S. only go online via smartphones and tablets. The measurement firm further notes that 13 percent of users accessing retail apps and sites do so via mobile devices only. Interestingly, the number of mobile-only shoppers at the top 10 retailers exceeds 50 percent in some cases. During January, for example, comScore reports the following percentages for mobile-only shoppers at top retailers: 51 percent at Walmart, 59 percent at Apple, and 53 percent at Target. Perceptiv Labs, a startup from Waterloo, Ontario is launching a device for drones called SHIFT that can be used to capture remarkable aerial shots of an intended subject without ever going out of focus. The two-part accessory, available for pre-order now, comes with a processor and vision sensor that can be attached to the DJI Phantom and 3D Robotics Iris drone models. Amazon has announced its plans to release four premium mobile games for Apple’s iOS devices. Until recently, the company’s gaming endeavors had been tailored around its own hardware devices such as the Fire TV and Fire tablets. Amazon has yet to announce an official release date, but has listed “Lost Within,” “Tales from Deep Space,” “Til Morning’s Light” and “To-Fu Fury” as games to be released as iOS versions. The VideoLAN Organization has released an upgraded VLC 2.2.0 open source video player with some notable new features. VLC for Linux, Mac and Windows now includes an in-app extensions store, in-app subtitle downloads, resume playback functionality, and support for interactive Blu-ray menus. Resume playback has been available on mobile versions, but is now offered on the desktop. VideoLAN has also added support for Android TV, Windows Phone and Windows RT. Since last summer, Google has been improving the technology behind Android for Work, an initiative to push the company’s mobile operating system in the workplace.
