Samsung’s New QD-OLED Monitor Called a ‘Game Changer’
December 19, 2023
Samsung Display has revealed plans to begin mass production on a new type of monitor with ultra-high-definition resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. Samsung says this is the highest pixel density and UHD resolution among available OLED monitors, and that the display also offers super-fast response speed to thrill gamers. The new QD-OLED monitors will initially be offered in two sizes: 32 inches and 27 inches. Typically, 30-inch QHD monitors offer 2560×1440 pixels, which Samsung says is fine for “general-purpose” use, adding that “consumers who enjoy gaming and high-definition video content will have a strong preference for UHD products.”
Samsung Display says the company is targeting a 300 percent increase in monitor shipments for 2024 as a result of its new QD-OLED product line, according to Tom’s Guide, which writes that “the 31.5-inch model will be marketed toward more high-end gaming, what with its purported pixel density of 140 PPI and UHD resolution of 3840×2160,” while “the smaller option will feature a QHD resolution at 2560×1440 in tandem with a flat screen.”
Each will have a sizzling 360Hz refresh rate and 0.3ms response time, per Samsung, which developed the new display technology in conjunction with AMD, using its next-generation RDNA 3 GPU chips, which were particularly helpful in fueling the refresh rates.
“Hopefully, that’s something we’ll see at CES 2024 when that kicks off in a few weeks,” notes Tom’s Guide.
To achieve UHD resolution, Samsung explains in its new product announcement that it “applied ultra-precise inkjet printing technology to the quantum dot (QD) light-emitting layer,” explaining that “by optimizing the inkjet nozzle and spray volume, the pixel density has been increased to 140 PPI (pixels per inch), which is equivalent to the pixel density of a 65-inch 8K TV.”
“According to Samsung, the industry estimates QD-OLED monitor shipments to reach 600,000 units by the end of 2023 — four times as much as 2022,” writes Tom’s Hardware, noting that “QD-OLED displays are a well-established display technology for TVs, phones, and handheld gaming devices such as the much-appreciated Steam Deck OLED.”
Digital Trends offers an explainer on what it calls a “hybrid display technology,” which it says combines “the vibrant colors and leap-off-the-screen brightness that the best QLED TVs deliver” with “the insane black levels, ultra-rich colors, and incredible contrast of an OLED set.”
