Acer brought a fleet of new Predator gaming monitors to CES, including the curved colossus spanning 57-inches, the Predator Z57, and glasses-free 3D Predator SpatialLabs View 27, a mass market spin on the company’s SpatialLabs professional display. Sprawling across 7,680 x 2,160 pixels, the flagship Z57 MiniLED runs at 120Hz, with 2,304 dimming zones, dual HDR and peak brightness of 1,000 nits, according to Acer, which has it priced at $2,500, calendared in Q2, as is the $2,000 View 27. Dell is showing off two new curved ultrawide monitors at CES. The 5K UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor displays at 5120×2160 and is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified. Starting at $2,400, the ultrawide is the world’s first 40-inch 5K monitor certified for five-star eye comfort, according to Dell. The company also introduced the UltraSharp 34 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor with 3440×1440 WQHD resolution. In addition to eye comfort, both models feature IPS Black technology and single-cable Thunderbolt 4 connectivity (albeit at different rates with the 40-inch topping out at 140W versus 90W for the junior sibling, at $1,020). Dell’s Alienware has redesigned its gaming laptops with the debut of the m16 R2. It is also coming to market with Pro Line peripherals and two new QD-OLED curved gaming monitors, being showcased this week at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The new m16 R2 laptop has a slimmed down look, with a reduced heat shelf and Stealth Mode that turns off the glitzy lighting and boisterous sound for gamers who want their portable hardware to perform double duty as a productivity device. Display manufacturers are giving gamers a big OLED push this year. That means faster refresh rates, a big plus when it comes to action titles, including sports. Samsung has a 32-inch OLED monitor that delivers 4K at 240Hz and 27-inch QHD OLED monitors and panels that clock at 360Hz. LG Display, providing tech to third parties — has debuted a 1440p panel said to be the fastest OLED yet. LG Elecronics’ own UltraGear 32 OLED is the company’s first to use dual refresh technology and has a .03ms response time, processing 4K at 240Hz and 480Hz for 1080p. Samsung Electronics has unveiled three new matte-finish, anti-glare Odyssey OLED gaming monitors in the lead-up to this week’s CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The new tech is part of a trend toward bigger, faster QD-OLED gaming monitors that will pave the way for greater nuance and realism for game content creators in addition to heightening the experiential factor for players. The new Samsung displays include an updated Odyssey OLED G9 — a 49-inch curved ultra-wide gaming monitor with DQHD (5,120 x 1,440) resolution, a 32:9 aspect ratio and other upgraded features. Samsung Display has revealed plans to begin mass production on a new type of monitor with ultra-high-definition resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. Samsung says this is the highest pixel density and UHD resolution among available OLED monitors, and that the display also offers super-fast response speed to thrill gamers. The new QD-OLED monitors will initially be offered in two sizes: 32 inches and 27 inches. Startup Flip AI has built a custom LLM to run its observability platform. Observability is the act of monitoring corporate IT systems, ferreting out issues or identifying potential problems before they occur. It’s a 24/7 process, and can slow down sites or apps, sometimes causing crashes. Not to be confused with the PDF reader app, Flip AI has trained an LLM specifically to monitor new and emerging challenges. Concurrently, Flip AI has announced $6.5 million in seed funding led by Factory with participation from Morgan Stanley Next Level Fund and GTM Capital. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is a 1000R curved 57-inch gaming monitor that uses quantum mini-LED technology for pixel resolution of 7,680 × 2,160 at 32:9. Announced in November as the first monitor with DisplayPort 2.1 support, it has 240Hz refresh rate and connects with the Samsung Gaming Hub for cloud gaming. Samsung, which is calling the Neo G9 “the world’s first single monitor with dual ultra-high-definition resolution,” says it will ship later this year and did not announce pricing. In a lead-up to CES 2023, Lenovo has raised the curtain on new ThinkPad laptops, ThinkVision monitors, IdeaPad laptops, an IdeaCentre Mini desktop and the next-generation Smart Tab M9. The new devices focus on hybrid working environments and mobility, including lightweights, 2-in-1 models, and ultraportable laptops with the latest Intel Core processors. Those who work with a dual monitor setup may be intrigued by the new ThinkVision P49w-30 ultrawide, which measures 49-inch diagonally and sports a QHD IPS panel with a 2000:1 contrast ratio. The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) Awards Committee revealed winners of its 2020 HPA Awards for Engineering Excellence, to be given out in a virtual ceremony on November 19. This year will mark the 15th anniversary of the HPA Awards, founded to “recognize creative artistry and innovation in the professional media content industry.” This year’s awards will honor EIZO’s Prominence CG3146 31.1-inch HDR reference monitor; Eluvio Content Fabric for managing and distributing large form content; the Moxion Immediates platform; and Carl Zeiss SBE: eXtended Data (XD) lens metadata technology. At CES 2018, Samsung’s latest QLED monitor, dubbed the CJ791, will support Intel’s Thunderbolt 3. The high bandwidth interconnect works with the USB-C connector allows the monitor to receive video from a laptop and charge it with up to 85W of power. According to Samsung, the CJ791 is the first curved monitor to feature Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. The company touts the 34-inch CJ791 model as providing exceptional picture quality as well as single-source power and processing speed.
