Google Chromecast Streaming Media Fob Adds Hulu Plus App

When Google’s $35 Chromecast streaming media player launched in July, it only supported Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies and Google Play Music. Google added support for Hulu Plus yesterday, the first new partner since Chromecast made its debut. Other apps are reportedly going to be supported as well, although formal announcements have not yet been made. Pandora and HBO Go are two services rumored to be integrated in the future.

The free Hulu service is not supported by the new Chromecast deal; interested consumers must subscribe to Hulu Plus for $7.99 a month. Hulu is currently available on 390 million smartphones, game consoles, connected TVs and set-top boxes.

“A quick refresher on how Chromecast works: You plug the gizmo into the HDMI port on the back of an HDTV — Google says there are more than 600 million TVs around the world with the port — and connect to Wi-Fi,” reports USA Today. “From there you can wirelessly stream or ‘cast’ video and audio to the TV from supported apps on an Android tablet or smartphone or from an iPhone or iPad.”

“You can also use the Chrome Web browser on your Windows PC or Mac, or the browser baked into Google’s own pricey Chromebook Pixel laptop, to ‘tab cast’ onto the TV the Web page you’re looking at on your computer, a feature still in a beta-testing phase.”

Chromecast users who access Hulu Plus will have basic functionality of play/pause and 10-second rewind of the Hulu video player.
