Bitmoji Plaza: Snapchat Is Launching Virtual World on the Web

Snapchat is developing a virtual 3D world where users can adopt Bitmoji avatars and socialize in an immerse digital environment. Called “Bitmoji Plaza,” the digital town center will live in the web version of the Snapchat app. The move shows Snap Inc. expanding its horizons and potentially setting up for other virtual worlds in preparation for the 2026 release of the company’s consumer AR glasses. While a Bitmoji world is an elementary transition to the metaverse, Snap is also expanding the use of Bitmoji stickers with a new app that lets Android and iOS users add them to messages.

“Bitmoji Plaza is an opt-in experience for Snapchatters,” Snap explains in a support post. “Your Bitmoji, and those of your friends, will only appear in Bitmoji Plaza if you and others opt-in to join. You can turn this feature on or off in web settings under ‘Bitmoji Plaza,’” the company adds.

Social Media Today describes Bitmoji Plaza as “not really a ‘metaverse’ as such — as it’s not intended to be an expanded digital world, incorporating a range of experiences — but it’s similar in how you interact via avatars in the space.”

It’s rolling out gradually and not immediately active for all users, nor is it activated in the Snapchat mobile app, but Snap says it intends to build on the experience. For now, “your Bitmoji can move or dance around in this shared space. You can see your friends’ Bitmojis, and your friends can see your Bitmoji. Your Bitmojis can even wave to each other,” Snap says, describing minimalist interactions in a 3D environment.

“It’s kind of like Roblox, but with Bitmoji characters, and at present at least, without games or expanded engagement opportunities,” Social Media Today reports, describing it as a social extension “for Snapchatters on the web,” which SMT surmises are few.

“Snapchat is primarily focused on the app, and as such, web logins for Snapchat likely only account for a tiny fraction of its overall usage,” Social Media Today writes. However, Bitmoji action is massive, with an estimated 2.7 billion Bitmoji avatars currently active.

As for the stickers, Snap is “bringing the sticker library to your fingertips for more fun chats” outside the app, activated in Snap’s new iMessage app and Snapchat Keyboard for iOS and Android, the company explains in a newsroom post.

Following activation, “you’ll be able to select ‘Snapchat’ from your list of sticker sources on other messaging applications” and use customized Snapchat Bitmoji stickers where you chat with friends, reports Social Media Today.
