Valve Takes on Live Game Streaming with Steam Broadcasting
December 4, 2014
The game streaming space, one that has been dominated by Amazon’s Twitch and various gamer YouTube channels, has proven that today’s gamers are just as interested in watching others play as they are in playing games themselves. In response to this trend, game developer Valve, the company behind Steam’s game services, has announced Steam Broadcasting, a tool that allows members to become viewers by tuning into the live gameplay of other users within the Steam gaming community.
According to TechCrunch, Steam Broadcasting, although in beta, is an upgrade to a former Steam feature that displayed status updates of when friends were playing a game. With the new capabilities, users will “be able to click on those status updates and go straight to watching a live stream of your friends” in action as they play one of Steam’s PC games.
Users have the option to enable and adjust privacy settings to determine which friends and community gamers can and cannot tune into their live gameplay. The new tool will also display a tab with active streams available for some of Steam’s most popular games.
TechCrunch also reports that “Steam Broadcasting is simply a new option to the Steam experience, with no new accounts to sign up for or third-party apps to download.”
