Twitter Prioritizes Discovery in Its Podcast Tests with Spaces

Twitter is testing a heightened presence in podcasting, offering a redesigned Spaces tab that includes a podcast option in an announcement that hints at a collaboration with Vox Media. Couched as an investment in audio creators, Twitter says the redesign includes personalized hubs (which it’s calling “Stations”) that group audio content together by specific themes such as News, Music and Sports. Integrating podcasts into Spaces, Twitter’s designated area for audio, is “a simple and intuitive way that allows listeners to simply hit play and go” and compile personal collections of live and recorded Spaces audio discussions.

As of last week, Twitter made the revamped Spaces with podcasts visible to a random group of global English-speakers on Android and iOS. After opening the Spaces tab, users will be presented with three sections: Stations, a Spaces spotlight featuring top curated content, and a Preview tab for upcoming programming. The Stations will feature popular podcasts from around the world. Users will receive recommendations based on the themes and people followed.

The Verge compares Twitter’s Stations approach to podcasting to “a Pandora station but for spoken word,” and says it is “pretty different from the a la carte listening podcast consumers are used to on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.”

“The more users listen, the more tailored the audio Stations will become,” notes The Verge. “But Twitter isn’t starting from square one — the company is relying on what it already knows about its users’ interests to curate the playlists. It’ll draw from the interests of people they follow, as well.”

In a blog entry, Twitter says its internal research indicates 45 percent of U.S. Twitter users listen to podcasts monthly, “so if someone regularly interacts with Vox content on Twitter, they’ll probably see a Vox podcast in a Spaces hub.”

“Whether it’s Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway’s ‘Pivot,’ our daily news explainer ‘Today, Explained,’ or ‘Stay Tuned with Preet Bharara,’ we’re excited Twitter is offering users and podcast fans an exciting new frontier,” Vox Media general manager of audio Ray Chao said of Twitter’s podcast plans.

TechCrunch says Twitter’s podcasting announcement was expected, “given that the social network has been spotted testing a podcast addition for the past couple of months,” but says the move confounds expectations “in making podcasts a part of Spaces, as opposed to giving them their own home on the platform.”
