Nothing Phone (3) Touts 50MP Cameras, Tiny Second Screen

British phone maker Nothing Technology Limited has announced the Phone (3), with a divergent look and major camera upgrades that cater to its young fanbase. At a launch event in London, Nothing CEO Carl Pei said his company, which also makes headphones and earbuds, will go “all-in” marketing its new Android flagship smartphone against premium offerings from Samsung and others. It starts at $800, 25 percent more than the Phone (2), but Pei says there are plenty of upgrades — including four 50MP cameras and a circular mini-LED screen on the back of the device. Roughly the size of a quarter, the secondary screen displays data in a retro-looking dot matrix format called the “Glyph Matrix.”

The idea is it will provide alerts and basic information without waking the main screen providing extra battery life, a major Phone (3) selling point.

Engadget reports “Nothing claims people will be able to get up to 80 hours of uptime” from the 150mAh silicon battery, which supports both 65W wired and 15W wireless charging and “with the right power adapter” can fully recharge in under an hour. PhoneArena notes the wired charger “will get you from empty to 50 percent in only 19 minutes.”

Practically speaking, the camera array is the main event. “Nothing is a brand for the young, and if there’s one thing young people do besides scrolling TikTok, that’s taking pictures and video of themselves (probably to be used on TikTok),” writes PhoneArena, detailing that in addition to 24mm front and main rear focal lengths, camera specs include:

  • Main 50MP shooter with a large 1/1.3-inch sensor and bright f/1.68 lens
  • Periscope zoom camera offering 70mm focal length, up to 60X AI super resolution zoom, and even 10cm macro shots
  • 114-degree 50MP ultrawide
  • 50MP f/2.5 front camera for selfies that can shoot 4K video

TechCrunch points out the general specs are comparable to other Android flagships, including “a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with 1.5K resolution,” powered by a 4-nanometer Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. The entry model has 256GB of storage, while a $900 version comes with 512GB.

Phone (3) also features an “Essential” key to trigger AI functions, including Essential Space, which can save notes and do voice transcriptions, and the natural language Essential Search that lets you find on-device files and do Web queries (with more apps to come)

The phone will ship on July 15 with the Android 15-based Nothing OS 3.5 “and will be updated to Nothing OS 4.0, based on Android 16, later this year,” TechCrunch adds.
