8K Association Announces Performance Specs For 8K TVs

The 8K Association (8KA), a non-profit organization open to any company in the 8K value chain, determined and released the “key performance attributes” for consumer 8K televisions. The attributes were chosen in partnership with the association’s membership of leading consumer electronics brands, TV panel manufacturers and others in the 8K ecosystem. 8KA executive director Chris Chinnock noted that reaching this “milestone is a great testament to the cooperative spirit the members of the 8K Association enjoy.”

The 8K Association defines 8K as “the latest and highest-resolution standard for content creation, distribution and television displays that enables over 33 million pixels of resolution, which is 4 times sharper than the UHD/4K standard.”

The newly released specification includes “recommended performance levels for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and color performance along with interface requirements to help ensure consumers have confidence in their newly purchased 8K TVs.” The association’s members will develop a compliance test for a “transparent testing process,” and will also “promote a logo on any member’s 8K TV that meets or exceeds the newly defined technical standard.”

The specs cover input parameters, display performance and interface and media formats. Defined as 7680 x 4320 pixel resolution, the 8K TV spec includes input frame-rates-per-second of 24p, 30p and 60p; more than 600 nits peak luminance for displays, HEVC codec; HDMI 2.1 interface; as well as “additional performance and interface specifications (available to members).”

The 8K Association’s membership continues to grow. Board members now include AUO, Hisense, Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, TCL with the new addition of Samsung Display, Tencent and Xperi. New principal members are Novatek and V-Silicon; new associate members include Innolux, Chili and Louis Pictures; and new supporter members are Intel, ATEME and AstroDesign. (UltraFix is also in the process of joining.)

“We expect to announce addition high-level members in the near term that will expand our efforts into other parts of the ecosystem and allow us to continue to educate and deliver positive 8K messages to professionals and consumers alike,” said Chinnock.
