Oculus Rift the Most Popular VR Platform Among Developers

Today’s game developers are most interested in creating virtual reality projects for the Oculus Rift headset, according to a new survey from the Game Developers Conference. Nineteen percent of the 2,000 respondents said they were currently working on a new game for the device and 20 percent said their next VR project would be for the Oculus Rift. Only 8 percent of respondents said they were working on VR projects for Samsung’s Gear VR, the second most popular VR headset.

The 2016 State of the Industry Report was released ahead of the Game Developers Conference, a popular annual trade show. Oculus Rift is the clear favorite for developers, but that may be because of developers’ unfamiliarity with other competitors, reports Ars Technica.

More than three-quarters of respondents said they had tried the Oculus Rift. Meanwhile, only 46 percent said they have tried Google Cardboard, 31 percent have tried Gear VR, 21 percent have tried PlayStation VR, and 19 percent have tried the HTC Vive.

Those competitor VR headsets are in a close race for second place in terms of the number of developers creating games for those platforms. In addition to the 8 percent of respondents working on a Gear VR project, another 7 percent are developing apps for Google Cardboard. The HTC Vive and PlayStation VR headsets are the focus for about 6 percent of developers each.

Still, there are more respondents (25 percent) not currently interested in developing for VR or AR headsets than there are working on a game for the Oculus Rift (19 percent). Many more developers, some 44 percent, say they aren’t currently working on a VR project, but they would be open to the idea in the future.

Three-quarters of developers believe that VR is “a long-term sustainable business to be in,” but many don’t see the technology ever surpassing the popularity of traditional video game consoles.
