Google Will Relocate Play Movies & TV Purchases in January

Alphabet-owned Google, which announced the end of its Play Movies & TV app in October 2022, now has a plan for relocating the video content that users have purchased on the service. Starting January 17, customers will be able to access their past Play Movies & TV purchases as well as active rentals on YouTube, Android TV devices, Google TV devices and the Google TV mobile app (including the iOS version). “We are making some changes to simplify how you purchase new movies or access the movies and TV shows you’ve purchased through Google,” the company explained.

While Android Police calls it “a much-needed decluttering,” it also said “Google is still juggling too many places where you can buy or rent movies and TV shows.” The company provided instructions on how to access the relocated content or purchase new shows in a support post.

“If you have a TV or streaming device powered by Android TV, you can watch things you’ve purchased or things you want to rent from the Shop tab starting January 17th,” The Verge summarizes, adding that those who access Android TV through a set-top box will watch or rent from the YouTube app, also the hub for those who stream through browsers.

“Google has been slowly pushing users away from Google Play Movies & TV for quite awhile,” and had already started pointing the Google Play Movies & TV app on Android TV to the Shop tab, “so hopefully these changes won’t make for too jarring of a transition,” writes The Verge.

Most users cannot use the Play Movies & TV app already, writes 9to5Google, but for Android TV users who do still have it, “the ‘Shop’ tab will become the only option.”

Those who plan on accessing their film and television content through YouTube should be aware that “while you can watch your previously purchased movies and shows on YouTube anywhere, buying or renting new ones is a bit more limited,” per Android Police, which says “only 46 countries offer movie purchases and rentals, but when it comes to buying TV shows, it’s exclusive to the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland.”

In October, Google “had already moved Android and iOS users to the Google TV app, removed the app from every Roku and most smart TVs, and pulled the app from Android TV,” The Verge notes.

Google isn’t alone in consolidating entertainment apps. The Verge says “Apple introduced a refreshed TV app that lets you access things like Apple TV Plus as well as buy and rent shows and movies all in one app.”
