Google Labs is testing Doppl, an experimental app that uses AI to let you virtually try on clothes. Available on iOS and Android in the U.S., Doppl requires the user to upload a full body photo to which images of outfits can then be applied. It will work with various types of outfit photos, from pictures taken with a smartphone to screen grabs from shopping sites or social media. Doppl can also create AI-generated videos from a static image to give an idea of what the outfit would look like from different angles when worn. While Google hopes Doppl “helps you explore your style in new and exciting ways,” it cautions that the app “is in its early days and it might not always get things right.”
“Doppl’s virtual try-on makes it fun and easy to see any outfit on a digital, animated version of yourself,” Google notes in a blog post. However, in this early version, “fit, appearance and clothing details may not always be accurate.” For those willing to give Doppl a try, Google Labs provides details on how to use it.
Google Shopping AI features rolled out in May, basically adding the ability to generate video as well as a more personal spin. “You can also save or share your best looks with friends or followers,” Google adds.
While Google had previously offered a virtual try-on option, Doppl personalizes the process. “Gone are the days of browsing static model images, that may or may not resemble your own body,” writes Tom’s Guide, noting Doppl “takes shopping to the next level by letting users see virtually how the clothes will fit, and even move, on you. And it’s all powered by AI.”
The Verge gives Doppl an enthusiastic review, suggesting it’s easy to use: “I just tried on five different outfits in about 10 minutes.” But it’s not perfect: “It mostly works, but it has clear issues putting pants on photos of me wearing shorts, and it even replaced my mismatched socks with AI-generated feet in one instance,” The Verge reviewer shares.
Google says it hopes to collect feedback from users from Doppl’s experimental phase, and will presumably work on it before a general release. “Given that the Doppl is an experimental launch, it’s unknown when or if Google plans to bring the app to additional regions,” TechCrunch reports.
