ESPN DTC and FOX One Merging into Mega Package This Fall

The Walt Disney Company and Fox Corporation are joining forces to market their sports streaming services. In addition to being sold separately, ESPN’s upcoming direct-to-consumer platform and FOX One will be offered as a $39.99 monthly bundle starting October 2. Both individual services debut August 21, with ESPN charging $29.99 per month and FOX One priced at $19.99 monthly. FOX One will include Fox’s NFL and MLB telecasts as well as FOX News, FOX Weather, FOX Business, FOX Broadcasting and more, while the ESPN DTC service will include access to ESPN’s linear networks, ESPN+ and ESPN on ABC.

“The new bundle suggests Disney and Fox seek a competitive edge as they launch similar services in the same time frame,” writes Variety. “Disney has not been shy about using bundles to expand the potential customer base for its streaming services, which also include Hulu and Disney+.”

“Working with FOX One on this bundle offer allows us to bring ESPN’s world-class sports content to even more fans in a seamless and innovative way,” Disney Platform Distribution EVP Sean Breen said in an announcement.

According to SVP of Strategy and Business Development for FOX Direct to Consumer Tony Billetter, “viewers will have access to an incredible portfolio of content through this bundle, including NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, College Football and Basketball, NASCAR, INDYCAR, UFC, as well as the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and more as we continue to look for opportunities to streamline the user experience, especially for the ultimate sports fan.”

Deadline calls the joint initiative “the latest example of third-party bundling, but the first notable package involving major sports rights holders,” pointing out that such packages have “gained a degree of traction” as “consumers are being confronted by significant price increases and overwhelming choice in the marketplace.”

Disney and Fox previously planned to join forces with Warner Bros. Discovery to launch a sports streaming platform called Venu but scrapped that idea after being sued for antitrust. “By the time the legalities were ironed out, Disney agreed to take a stake in the plaintiff, the Fubo streaming service, and fold its Hulu Live TV service into it,” Variety reports.
