CES 2013: Samsung Launches Ultra HDTVs as Part of New Lineup

Samsung is previewing 85-inch and 110-inch Ultra HD LED TVs; a new flagship Smart TV, the F8000 LED with quad-core processor; and a 55-inch OLED TV with Multi-View feature. The company is also extending its “Smart” capabilities including voice recognition and introducing its 2013 Evolution Kit to bring new features to existing Samsung displays without requiring a new television.

The 85-inch Ultra HD model (with 120-watt array speakers built into the frame of the television) was a press event highlight. It will be out of the gate in March; pricing was not announced.

As there is currently no system in place that could deliver a steady stream of 4K content, the display is designed to upscale HD content to 4K resolution. That might include broadcast programming, Blu-ray titles, or content streamed or downloaded from the Internet including UltraViolet titles.

The new F8000 LED TV is the first Samsung television to feature a quad-core processor. It will be available in sizes up to 75-inches and feature a quarter-inch thick bezel. Samsung also previewed a 55-inch OLED TV, the KN55F9500 with true Multi-View, which enables two people to view entirely different programs with audio.

Each new Samsung TV will offer “S-Recommendation with voice interaction technology,” which the company said would analyze a user’s viewing history and create a personalized menu of on-air, on-demand and app content for each viewer. Samsung claims that improved voice interaction technology would be capable of understanding full sentences and natural language. Coupled with S-Recommendation, viewers could ask the Smart TV for movie and TV show suggestions or request films, according to Samsung.

The Evolution Kit, first announced a year ago, enables Samsung Smart TVs to be updated with new features each year, without needing to purchase a new TV. Features in this year’s Evolution Kit device (about the size of a deck of cards) include faster speed for browsing, as well as updates such as voice control.

Additionally, Samsung announced that it would offer support for the HEVC codec.

The company can be found at booth #12004 in the Central Hall.
