YouTube Space LA: Production Facility Opens in Playa Vista

YouTube has opened another digital video production facility intended for its content partners. Officially called “YouTube Space LA,” the new 41,000-square-foot Playa Vista facility features four soundstages, three green screens, high-end production equipment, 20 post production bays and a screening room with 4K projector. The over-sized lobby, designed for fostering collaboration and hosting big events, touts an HD video wall comprised of 36 monitors.

“We wanted a place where people from all media, and also lots of different kinds of channels, could come together and work,” explains Liam Collins, head of YouTube Space LA.

Collins suggests the facility was designed as a place where content creators would feel comfortable hanging out. It is also intended to be “as simple as a Flip cam, but also have something for the most sophisticated creator.”

“Each quarter, YouTube selects a new cohort of content creators to come in and have full reign over the facility at no cost for three months,” reports GigaOM. “The Space is meant to be a collaborative place where YouTube creators can come together, work with and learn from each other. Oh, and YouTube wouldn’t mind if they produced higher-end content for the video giant to monetize.”

YouTube Space LA joins similar YouTube production facilities in London and Tokyo. According to the facility’s FAQ page, “YouTube Space LA was established to meet the needs of digital storytellers; a place where YouTube creators will be given the time, resources, space and inspiration to evolve and innovate how they tell stories on YouTube, at no charge by YouTube.”

“Located in storied Building 17, a hangar originally built in 1950 as part of the secretive Hughes Aircraft facility in Playa Vista, CA, the YouTube Space LA has revived this building of innovation for YouTube creators from around the world to tell their stories, collaborate with others, attend workshops, events and screenings, and have access to cutting edge production and post-production resources,” notes the FAQ page.

GigaOM provides a 5-minute video tour of the new facility. The YouTube Space LA page also features a 2-minute promotional video.
