Xbox 360 Tops Sales Charts for 27th Consecutive Month

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was once again the best-selling game console in March, marking its 27th consecutive month topping the sales charts, according to The NPD Group. Microsoft reports that 261,000 Xbox 360s were sold last month in the U.S., while spending on related hardware, software and accessories totaled $402 million. While the Xbox beat Nintendo’s Wii U and Sony’s PlayStation 3, hardware sales were down from the previous year.

“Life-to-date Xbox 360 worldwide sales currently sit at 77.2 million,” according to a Thursday report from GameSpot. “Microsoft said earlier today that it sold 1.3 million systems during the past three months and reiterated that Xbox Live membership stands at 46 million.”

“Once again, though, the game industry overall had a down month in March, generating just $992.5 million in physical sales,” reports CNET. “During the same period in March 2012, its sales were $1.1 billion. Hardware sales saw the steepest decline, dropping 32 percent to $221.6 million. Software sales were nearly flat, coming in just 1 percent down at $554.8 million.”

In a (somewhat) related story, Mashable reports that Pizza Hut is launching a new app for Xbox Live that lets users place food orders via the Xbox 360.
