Pew Research: 30 Percent of U.S. Teens Use Chatbots Daily
December 11, 2025
Roughly 20 percent of U.S. teens surveyed say they were on TikTok and YouTube “almost constantly” in 2025, with YouTube distinguishing itself for use “by nearly all teens,” according to a new Pew Research study. Ninety percent of teens surveyed say they’ve used YouTube, followed by TikTok and Instagram, with at least 60 percent claiming usage, with Snapchat landing at about 55 percent. Chatbot use is at about 64 percent among respondents, with about 30 percent of teens saying they use companionable AI answer engines daily, led by OpenAI’s ChatGPT (59 percent).
The Pew study, Teens, Social Media and AI Chatbots 2025, examined the habits of 1,458 youth aged 13 to 17, finding that 97 percent of respondents say they use the Internet daily, with 40 percent admitting they are “almost constantly online,” a decrease from the 46 percent who confessed to the same last year (but up significantly from a decade ago, when that number was 24 percent).

The 2025 Pew study “suggests that despite growing concern over the potential mental health risks, teens are not putting down their phones, spending much of their time scrolling through social media, watching videos or consulting chatbots powered by artificial intelligence,” reports The New York Times.
A Pew Research Center summary of survey findings indicates “today’s online landscape for teens is marked by both stability and new trends,” singling out WhatsApp “for its growth in recent years,” with about 25 percent of teens now using the Meta Platforms app compared to 17 percent in 2022. Its overall teen penetration is still relatively low, however, trailing Facebook (31 percent) but surpassing Reddit and X (each about 20 percent).
Among chatbots, ChatGPT use was found to be “more than twice as popular as the next two most-used chatbots, Google’s Gemini (23 percent) and Meta AI (20 percent),” per TechCrunch, which adds that “46 percent of U.S. teens say that they use AI chatbots at least several times a week, while 36 percent report not using AI chatbots at all.” Only four percent of teens say they use chatbots “almost constantly.”
