Microsoft Goes All-In on Teams Integration with HoloLens 2

Full Microsoft Teams integration has come to HoloLens 2 headsets, which are now able to make calls, browse and view calendars or join group meetings, among other things. Microsoft is also combining its key Dynamics 365 Mixed Reality Apps Teams and OneDrive to existing integrations with the Azure cloud and Power Platform. “No matter where they are,” HoloLens 2 users can “summon an array of holographic windows with a Teams call or chat, a Power BI dashboard, a Word document, a PDF or video, their OneDrive folder, or their calendar and operate in an immersive, 3D experience,” the company says.

HoloLens 2 users will now be able to share “a new live video stream of shared screens” that “will appear as a hologram that can be moved and resized,” writes The Verge, noting “Teams users on desktop or mobile will see the HoloLens 2 video feed from the viewpoint of the person who is wearing the headset.”

“We’re truly delivering Windows in mixed reality,” Alysa Taylor, Microsoft corporate VP for Azure and Industry, said in a blog post at Microsoft Innovation. “Those capabilities help explain why businesses like Toyota have moved beyond just kicking the tires on the metaverse,” blogged Jack Siegel, emphasizing the broader application of technology to which cloud production workers have become accustomed.

When a Toyota Logistics Center worker in New Jersey was searching for a solution, “they put on a HoloLens 2 … opened a holographic window and called a colleague in California for help” and “were instantly looking through the eyes of someone on the opposite side of the country.”

“Microsoft Teams has largely been used on HoloLens 2 for remote assist scenarios where an engineer or support person would dial into a meeting or call and be guided through a problem,” writes The Verge.

“Users will no longer have to hop on a computer or a phone to attend meetings with the rest of their organization,” Engadget reports of the Teams functionality, explaining that “while the Hololens 2 headset has had the capability to make and receive Teams video calls for years, its collaborative features were still pretty limited.”

Microsoft is also making available Dynamics 365 Guides for on-the-job HoloLens 2 training, and is combining the Dynamics 365 Remote Assist and Guides features to make the HoloLens 2 headset more adaptable to hybrid work scenarios.
