Facebook Marketplace Gets Social Makeover with Help of AI

Meta is adding a social shopping spin to Facebook Marketplace in an effort to draw more young adults. The upgrade includes group features, AI insights and an easier checkout experience, the company says. Shoppers can now assemble Pinterest-like collections to share with friends, and people can “react and comment directly on Marketplace listings, helping others learn about item quality and discover unique finds,” Meta says. The company is also testing “collaborative buying,” which allows friends to join in the pre-purchase banter, “making it easier to coordinate pickup, negotiate prices, and get answers to your questions.”

Meta is “deepening integrations with eBay and Poshmark, letting users see listings from those platforms within their Marketplace feed,” reports eMarketer, noting that “more than half of Gen Zers are on Facebook — 53.2 percent log in at least once a month — and Marketplace shopping is one of their primary activities on the platform,” according to the publication’s U.S. Social Media Users by Generation 2025 study.

The platform also hopes to improve engagement by adding features like collections — groups of Marketplace listings friends can be invited to join. “Simply save a listing, start a new collection, and choose whether to make it public or private,” Meta explains in a news post. Collection updates can then be shared via Feed, Messenger and WhatsApp.

While Meta says the changes “are designed to make Marketplace more useful, they also mark the company’s ongoing efforts to bring Meta AI into all of its services and products,” TechCrunch points out. “Additionally, by blending social, commerce, and AI, the company is looking to boost time spent on Marketplace while also enhancing its competitiveness against other e-commerce platforms.”

Specifically, Meta is using AI to help Marketplace “learn what you’re interested in, so you’ll see more items aligned with your preferences, making your shopping experience even more personalized and relevant.”

It is also testing a feature designed to help shoppers come up with questions when making a purchase. “When you start a chat with a seller, you’ll see a ‘Suggested questions to ask’ button pop up,” Meta says, explaining that when you tap it “Meta AI will use the details from the listing and your conversation to suggest questions you might want to ask the seller.”

It will also “offer AI-generated insights for buyers on vehicle listings, such as engine specs, safety ratings, and price information,” eMarketer writes.
