CES: Asus Upgrades Popular ROG Zephyrus Gaming Laptops

At CES 2023, Asus refreshed this year’s models of its popular ROG Zephyrus gaming laptops. The new flagship M16 comes tricked out with 13th Gen Intel i9 and Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics. The RTX 4080 variant starts at $3,900. Also arriving in the first quarter of 2023 are updates on the G14 and ROG Zephyrus Duo 16, with options including AMD Ryzen 9 Zen 4 or 13th Gen Intel processors and Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. On the display front Asus offers the ROG Nebula, powered by mini-LED powered Nebula HDRs. Next-gen cooling rounds out the package.

Of the Zephyrus line, GamesRadar writes that “this slimline machine has been through several iterations over the last few years, with each bringing a new life to the lightweight, playful, super portable range.”

A bold move for the 2023 models “is the inclusion of the crystal sharp mini-LED Nebula HDR display” for even the entry level G14 models, “working to keep all those colors bright and bold while retaining the deepest of blacks at the same time,” reports GamesRadar, noting that the Nebula technology “was previously reserved for the powerful Strix line.”

The Nebula HDR display is powered by a mini-LED backlight that has individual zones that can brighten and dim separately. Peak brightness of up to 1100 nits of peak brightness make the 16-inch ROG Nebula HDR display — with a 240Hz refresh rate, QHD+ (2,560 x 1,600) and a 3ms response time — a dazzler.

Laptop Mag reports that the Zephyrus M16 is redesigned from the ground up with a new chassis that allows for “a larger, full-width heatsink paired with ROG’s Tri-Fan Technology, which routes air from three fans toward the heatsink for more efficient cooling.” The turbo-cooling means the 2023 Zephyrus M16 goes 20W higher than the 2022 model.

It also has a mirror-polish finish along with finger-resistant Off Black. The Zephyrus M16 “is the second laptop to feature ROG’s AniMe Matrix Display,” Laptop Mag reports, noting “the 16-inch canvas of the M16 allows more room for animations, with thousands of precision-milled holes in the lid.”

On the high-end, the dual-screen 16-inch Zephyrus Duo (above) takes “productivity and gaming to new heights” with AMD’s newest Ryzen Zen 4 processors and Precision Boost Overdrive overclocking. “There’s a nice balance between AMD and Intel here, the G14 is no longer a team red exclusive, and you’ll find Nvidia RTX 40-Series GPUs up for grabs across the range as well,” GamesRadar assesses.

Digital Trends calls the new ROG Zephyrus laptops “likely to quickly climb the ranks of the best gaming laptops you’ll be able to buy in 2023.”
