CES 2013: Tobii Takes Eye Tracking Gaze to the Next Level

Swedish developer Tobii Technology unveiled Tobii REX at CES this week, which the company describes as the first gaze interaction computer peripheral to be made available for the consumer market. It leverages the eye-tracking-based interface Tobii Gaze so that users can control their computers by combining their eye gaze with touch, mouse and keyboard controls.

The Tobii REX peripheral adds Gaze features to any Windows 8 PC. It adheres to the bottom of a PC screen and plugs into the computer via USB. Following calibration, a user’s gaze can scroll, zoom, auto-center and open windows.

While enthusiastically taking over almost the entire interface the value of contextual eye tracking could possibly replace many tasks that could benefit from “intuitive” assistance like reading. Finding the balance between useful and “hunting error” will be the zone of focus as their development partners experiment. This bears a close watch as this interface matures.

Some of you may remember that during last year’s show, when Tobii took home three “Best of Show” awards, we reported that the company had developed the first eye-controlled video game called “EyeAsteroids.”

Tobii REX is currently available for software developers (online for $995) and will be available for consumers by fall of this year. You can see it in the South Hall, #35266.
