CES 2013: Huawei Unveils World’s Largest Smartphone Screen

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has been on our radar since rumors began buzzing about its long-awaited Windows Phone 8 handsets and a possible 5-inch smartphone/tablet hybrid announcement. Then news was leaked regarding its Android-powered Ascend Mate with 6.1-inch screen, designed to take on the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Well, it’s now official. The company announced today that its Ascend Mate has the largest screen of any smartphone in the world.

At CES, Huawei CEO Richard Yu demonstrated the durability of the Ascend Mate and its smaller sibling, the 5-inch Ascend D2, by pouring water over one of the phones and dropping it on the floor, claiming the same could occur on a rocky road without damaging the handset.

“Huawei Ascend Mate has a screen-to-body ratio of 73 percent – the highest in the industry – which maximizes your viewing pleasure for emails, documents, video or games,” notes the press release. “The 6.1-inch HD IPS+ LCD screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 for unsurpassed clarity and color accuracy, and ‘Magic Touch’ which provides enhanced screen responsiveness even with gloves.”

The Ascend D2 features 1080p HD resolution and retina LCD display with 443 pixel density, the highest of any smartphone currently on the market. The Ascend D2 also touts a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and 13-megapixel rear camera, while the Ascend Mate has 720p resolution and an 8-megapixel camera. Both phones run on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

According to the release, the Ascend Mate, “features a 4050 mAh battery and Huawei’s Hi-Silicon 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. With Huawei’s QPC and ADRX smart power-saving technology, the smartphone provides up to two days of ordinary usage on a single charge. It has the fastest battery charging capability of smartphones in its range, which saves over 30 percent of battery charging time.”

Huawei did not release pricing, but said the two devices will launch in China by next month. No dates were announced for a U.S. launch. Huawei will be at booth #30323 in the South Hall this week.
