Meta Updates Features for Reels on Facebook and Instagram

Instagram has started to let creators link multiple Reels, effectively creating their own “series.” The new capability, which TikTok already offers, makes it more convenient for viewers to discover and follow related content. The new “Link a Reel” feature lets creators sequentially either link generally related content or connect specific, sequentially related material, as in Part 2, Part 3, etc. Meta Platforms has also added a free AI-powered voice translation feature. Now available globally on Facebook and Instagram, it automatically dubs and lip syncs Reels into other languages using the sound and tone of the creator’s own voice.

“At launch, the feature supports translations from English to Spanish and vice versa, with more languages to be added over time,” and is available to “Facebook creators with 1,000 or more followers and all public Instagram accounts globally, where Meta AI is offered,” reports TechCrunch.

“The lip syncing feature matches your mouth’s movements to the translated audio, so that it looks like you’re really speaking the language in the reel,” Meta explains in a blog post that provides instructions on how to operate the feature.

“Getting started is simple. Before publishing your reel, click ‘Translate your voice with Meta AI,’” the company explains. “Then toggle the button to turn on translations and whether you want to enable lip syncing.” The dubbing can be turned on and off and the translations removed at any time.

The lip-sync feature, designed to make the speaker look more natural, is optional, according to TechCrunch. Meta adds that the translations can be reviewed and approved or rejected, and that choosing the latter will not affect the original video.

As for the Instagram Reels linking feature, TechCrunch explains that “creators can link Reels together when adding captions or by tapping the overflow menu in previously shared reels.” After the Reels are linked together in a series, “users will be able to navigate to the next reel using a new button located at the bottom left of the reel.”

“This will enable expanded storytelling in short-format,” while providing another means to organize content, writes Social Media Today, noting that while not exactly a new concept (name-checking TikTok), it “could be a valuable addition to your Reels strategy.”

In other new feature news, Meta has added Spotify integration to Instagram Stories and Notes, Engadget reports, adding that the new feature will “make it easier for Spotify’s nearly 700 million [global] users to share their favorite tunes” on Instagram, which has 2 billion users worldwide, according to Statista.
