WBD Earnings Buoyed by ‘Minecraft’ Film, HBO Max Growth

Warner Bros. Discovery reported revenue growth in Q2 with a $9.8 billion total compared to $9.7 billion for the same period in 2024. Propelled by the success of films like the action/comedy “A Minecraft Movie” and the horror hit “Sinners” starring Michael B. Jordan — in addition to the international rollout of HBO Max — the company turned a profit of $1.58 billion for the quarter, a significant increase over the same frame last year. Television series including “The Last of Us” and “Abbott Elementary” were hailed as examples of “creative excellence.” In the shareholder letter, WBD says it “optimized” linear networks, while making “substantive progress” in the movie studios and streaming arms.

As of July 1, the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group had already recorded more than $900 million in global earnings for the first six months of the year. Deadline mentions “Final Destination Bloodlines” and “F1 The Movie,” which Warner Bros. Pictures distributed in partnership with Apple, as additional bright spots.

Deadline name-checked Motion Picture Group co-chairs Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca for achieving a 60 percent revenue jump year-over-year, to $3.8 billion, with profit surging to $863 million (from $210 million).

The company “gained 3.4 million global streaming subscribers in the quarter, thanks in part to international expansion” of HBO Max, Variety writes. That brings streaming customers to a total of 125.7 million, on track to pass the 150 million mark by the end of next year. Streaming posted $293 million in revenue.

Bloomberg notes the company is in the process of “breaking into two separate entities, the Global Networks business and the Streaming and Studios company, to unshackle its streaming assets and studios business from the struggling cable division, according to CEO David Zaslav.”

The Wall Street Journal points out that the move comes “as the company and industry at large continue to move away from the linear TV business.”

“The new Global Networks business will include entertainment, sports and dozens of cable television brands such as CNN, TNT and TBS. The Streaming and Studios company will house HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television and the movie studio,” reports Bloomberg.
