Virtual Holographic 3D: zSpace Display Technology from Infinite Z

A new display technology called zSpace by California-based Infinite Z allows users to “feel” 3D images by tracking user’s eyes and hand movement. The technology can also create effects where users can move their heads around 3D video objects to see what is behind them. “The zSpace display could be revolutionary for designers and animators, but could also inspire innovation in computer gaming and augmented reality,” writes Technology Review.

Functionality centers on 3D glasses with markers that track infrared light to track head and eye movement. Users can also use a stylus to manipulate virtual images generated by the display or grab an image and move it through the 3D space.

“The technique, which the company calls ‘Virtual Holographic 3D,’ also lets you manipulate virtual objects as if they really were floating just inches in front of you,” explains the article.

Infinite Z released an SDK last month. And while its display is normally $3,995, you can purchase one for $1,500 by enrolling in the developer program.

“It’s easy to see how such technology could be very useful for designers, architects, and animators. But with luck, it could also find its way into a few consumer products. The effect would make for an awesome interactive gaming experience, or simply much more realistic and immersive 3D video,” suggests the article.

The post includes a compelling video demo.
