Valve Unveils Frame VR Headset and Steam Machine Console

In 2026, Valve will release a trio of new hardware products to complement its popular Steam Deck portable gaming device. They are the Steam Frame VR headset, Steam Machine game cube designed to port the Steam library to TV screens, and the wireless Steam Controller. The three devices are made to work together and are optimized for SteamOS but can run different software as part of Valve’s “open PC ecosystem.” Prices are yet to be announced. The Steam Frame, Valve’s first device to run SteamOS on an Arm processor, has experimental display support for 144Hz and can connect accessories like sensors and tracking devices via a high-speed nose port.

The Frame can stream content from nearby PCs running Steam or run in standalone mode. “While in standalone mode, you can still get something like a 1440p picture on what feels like a 70-inch virtual display running at 90, 120 or potentially 144Hz,” UploadVR reports, calling the Steam Frame Valve’s “most portable standalone PC ever.”

Valve describes the Steam Frame as a “streaming-first” device with new features to improve the experience. These include foveated streaming, which Valve says “optimizes detail where your eyes are looking and typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality.”

CNET puts the Steam Frame in the same class as the Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR, and points out “you can load your Steam game library directly onto it from a PC via a microSD card and start playing both VR and non-VR games on the go, or use the Steam Frame to wirelessly stream from your PC at home.”

The Steam Frame offers a “wide field of view (110 degrees) and LCD display (2,160 x 2,160 pixels per eye resolution),” CNET continues, adding that “the clear pancake lenses made everything look vivid and unmuddied.”

As for the Steam Machine, IGN says it “supports 4K gaming at 60 frames per second” with AMD FSR upscaling.

Mashable describes it as “a console version of a Steam Deck,” but Valve says it’s “six times more powerful.”

Valve released a Steam Machine console a decade ago, failing to get traction. It’s also the company’s second attempt at a headset, following the Valve Index, released in 2019.

Valve will also issue the Steam Controller, which comes with “the puck,” a wireless adapter that magnetically connects to the unit to charge it.

The upcoming hardware is showcased in a demo video, with complete specs available at the Steam Store.
