AI startup Runway has a new tool called Game Worlds that lets users generate simple video game worlds using images and text-based prompts. At the moment, Runway Game Worlds can only help generate simple text-based interactive adventures that include pictures, but the company has plans to enable more complex game creation by the end of the year. Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela says the company is interested in partnering with video game companies who are willing to provide game data that can be used to train the company’s models in exchange for generative capabilities. Facebook’s Oculus VR announced that its new Oculus Quest wireless virtual reality headset will debut in spring 2019 with an original Star Wars VR story from Disney’s ILMxLAB. “Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series,” which will have three parts, will be led by executive producer/writer David S. Goyer, who wrote “The Dark Knight” trilogy and “Call of Duty: Black Ops.” Other participants include ILMxLAB director of immersive content Mohen Leo and Oculus head of experiences Colum Slevin. Darth Vader is the star of an upcoming Lucasfilm virtual reality project centered on “Star Wars.” Although the project is largely undefined at this point — it has no name, genre, or release date — what we do know is that the story will both reveal new details about Darth Vader’s background and try out some innovative storytelling techniques. Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB, which accesses award-winning VFX facility Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and the “Star Wars” story group, is developing the project.
