Star Wars Coming to Fortnite in New ‘Galactic Battle’ Season

The Walt Disney Company, which last year invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games and its “Fortnite” online gaming franchise, has unveiled plans for what is being called its biggest “Star Wars” collaboration with the platform “Fortnite: Galactic Battle.” Rolling out beginning May 2, the new battle royale season is a five-part saga where players will experience new “Star Wars” gameplay each week through early June. While Disney-owned Lucasfilm and Epic’s “Fortnite” have joined forces before to mount battle royale seasons with “Star Wars” characters, the “Galactic” effort is said to be its most expansive collaboration to date.

The new treatment introduces new elements like Darth Jar Jar, a character that captured the imagination of Reddit’s “Star Wars” fan fiction forums.

“As part of the season, ‘Fortnite’ will introduce the new ability ‘Force Lighting,’ and also allow players to pilot and co-pilot iconic ‘Star Wars’ ships like X-wings and TIE Fighters,” Variety reports.

There will also be “original mash-up skins like Wookie Team Leader, which is a remix of the battle royale’s popular character, Cuddle Team Leader,” writes Game Rant, noting that “fans can also expect to see weekly updates that will shake up the gameplay of the season.”

The news was announced in Japan at the Star Wars Celebration event where Lucasfilm also shared an October 29 release date for its animated “Star Wars: Visions Volume 3” and unveiled a new spinoff series, “The Ninth Jedi.”

Deadline says “the ‘Fortnite’ news was announced via a new trailer that teases a Star Warsthemed Battle Pass with characters like Emperor Palpatine, new Item Shop offerings like Mace Windu, themed map locations, weekly gameplay content and culminates in a live end-of-season narrative event after the five-part saga runs through early June.”

Each week will have a different overarching theme through May and June, according to StarWars.com. The five-part saga will culminate in “an in-game narrative live event that will surely have players feeling like they’ve got the fate of the whole galaxy in their hands.”

While the “Galactic Battle” saga overlaps with the “Fortnite” multiverse, there are also plans for a separate Disney universe-centric game.
