Comcast Readies Expanded 4K Lineup and New Ultra HD Box

As part of upcoming expanded 4K content offerings via its Xfinity in UHD catalog, Comcast announced this week that it plans to launch an Ultra HD set-top box later this year. “The box, called the Xi4, will run on Comcast’s cloud-based, IP-capable X1 platform, enabling customers to create ‘virtual 4K linear channels’ via MSO’s UHD library,” reports Multichannel News. The company is also developing the Xi5 STB to support high dynamic range content. Late last year, Comcast launched an on-demand streaming app initially for Samsung UHD TVs.

Xbox One Likely to Add DVR Functionality Sometime This Year

In a post yesterday about the death of Windows Media Center, tech journalist and blogger Paul Thurrott cited unnamed sources regarding an update to Xbox One’s live TV functionality that would add television recording. This would allow Xbox One to replace TiVo and other DVRs in many households. Microsoft recently unveiled a tuner that enables the console to accept over-the-air broadcast TV signals. Last week’s Digital Hollywood Spring event at the Ritz Carlton in Marina Del Rey featured a new track: a three-day Virtual & Augmented Reality Summit. Panels and sessions covered a wide range of topics — including cameras, software solutions, sound design, workflow, file management, and more — and demonstrated just how rapidly this new art form is evolving. Jet Has Ambitious Plan to Take on Amazon with Lower Prices

Jet, the e-commerce startup that plans to compete with Amazon on price rather than delivery time, recently made a beta version of its site available to the first 10,000 customers of the nearly 360,000 it has reportedly signed on for early access. Where other e-commerce companies are aiming to make online shopping more convenient through means of expedited shipments, Jet hopes to help customers save hundreds per year by offering lower prices on all its goods. New Music Coalition Says Policy Should Not Be Driven by Labels

Amazon, Google, the National Association of Broadcasters, and Pandora Radio are among the launch members of the MIC Coalition (Music, Innovation, Consumers). The group plans to advocate for music policies that are “balanced among all participants rather than just those of the major record labels and publishers,” according to Broadcasting & Cable. Other members include CEA, Cox Media Group, iHeartMedia, and National Public Radio. “American music is the most successful in the world, aided in part by intellectual property laws that do not tilt in favor of record labels over the millions of daily listeners who consume music,” said NAB President Gordon Smith.

Speaking at ETC’s Media Management in the Cloud conference at NAB, Lincoln Wallen, CTO of DreamWorks Animation, described how “Cloud 2.0” gives digital graphics and animation artists extraordinary new creative freedom and power. Amazon Assures FAA That Prime Air Drones Safe for Deliveries

Amazon recently filed another request with the Federal Aviation Administration in which it advocated for a change in the regulations that are preventing the company from launching its drone-based delivery system called Prime Air. In its most recent proposal, Amazon claims to have addressed some of the safety concerns the FAA has had with drones for commercial usage. Among those claims, Amazon said its drones would rely on sensors and computers to safely travel on their designated routes. Facebook has launched a new marketing initiative called Anthology that enables advertisers to work with seven media partners to create sponsored videos. The company says that its media partners — The Onion, Vice, Disney, Funny or Die, Tastemade, Vox, and Electus Digital’s CollegeHumor — know how to get the most out of the Facebook platform. These video ads are one way that Facebook may be able to keep advertising, and soon publishing content, under its own roof. Disney Story Central Becomes SVOD Offering via AT&T U-verse

AT&T U-verse and Disney announced earlier this week the launch of a new subscription VOD service based on the Disney Story Central platform, which enables kids and parents to read along with narrated Disney books. According to Multichannel News: “The new $8 SVOD service brings the read-along platform to TV screens for the first time, the companies said. New titles will be added every few months.” AT&T U-verse subscribers also have access to live and on-demand programming from Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD.

Twitter Users Can Change Setting to Expand Direct Messaging

As promised, Twitter is moving forward with new changes to expand its private messaging feature that will allow users to receive private messages from any account. Twitter’s previous messaging policy forbid users from exchanging private messages, unless both users were following one another’s accounts. The new change, a setting option that will have to be manually enabled, may prompt more users to make use of Twitter’s Direct Messaging service, which has yet to gain significant traction. Technicolor and Sinclair Test Live UHD Broadcast with HDR

Technicolor and Sinclair Broadcast Group have successfully tested a live broadcast in 4K resolution with high dynamic range through the proposed ATSC 3.0 system. “There’s been a lot of attention on new Ultra HD (4K) TVs, which have the potential to display four times the resolution of today’s HD; and HDR, a feature that increases the range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks for a more realistic picture,” explains The Hollywood Reporter. “But currently, there isn’t a system in place to broadcast these images live and over the air.” Continue reading Technicolor and Sinclair Test Live UHD Broadcast with HDR

Scientists Develop Aluminum-Ion Battery for Commercial Use

A group of scientists at Stanford University has developed a sustainable, high performing aluminum battery that is supposedly safer and less expensive to produce than the alkaline and lithium-ion batteries commonly used today. Tidal Could Come Through on Promise to Change Music Industry

Tidal, Jay Z’s new artist-backed music streaming service, is the latest addition to a crowded field of companies offering music online. Spotify, Pandora, Rdio and others have featured similar music libraries — until now. Jay Z’s hit album “Reasonable Doubt” disappeared from Spotify earlier this week, while several top artists started to release content exclusively on Tidal.
