Pinterest Is Adding New Personalization Tools Powered by AI

Pinterest is experimenting with new AI-powered tools to make the platform more personalized for users. Now live in the U.S. and Canada, “Styled for You” uses AI to curate collages featuring newly imagined outfits assembled from past Pins. Pinthusiasts can mix-and-match different clothing and accessories to create and save new looks. Coming soon, “Boards Made for You” are personalized boards assembled through a combination of AI suggestions and editorial input. Trending fashion and weekly inspiration are key features of these shoppable boards, which will be appearing globally in the months ahead.

“Boards are central to what makes Pinterest an inspirational experience for our users, so we’re investing in making them even better,” Pinterest VP of Product Management Vicky Gkiza said in a newsroom post. “Today’s updates make boards into a personal shopping assistant, powered by AI, to help users move from admiring their dream styles or spaces to actively achieving them.”

Pinterest explains the updated boards, which can be viewed from the “My Boards” tab on the profile page, will feature a fresh look and tabs based on a user’s saved Pins. The quick take:

  • “Make it Yours” for fashion and some home decor boards. This tab will recommend products and content to help users bring their inspirations to life.
  • “More Ideas” provides recommended related Pins for all other board categories, such as beauty, recipes and art.
  • “All Saves” is where you can find all of your previously saved Pins.

“So now, every time you save a Pin, that’ll be adding to your AI-powered recommendations algorithm, which will then help Pinterest show you more relevant products and ideas, based on your interests,” Social Media Today reports.

“Pinterest has already integrated AI in various ways, including AI-driven recommendations and visual search,” writes TechCrunch, noting that “the aim of these AI features is to evolve Pinterest boards from mere organizational tools into a more personalized way to explore, shop, and find outfit inspiration.”

While Pinterest is clearly interested in harnessing the power of AI, it intends to keep the focus on the right type of artificial input, having in April announced plans to tamp down AI slop by labeling AI-generated and AI-modified images. The move also included controls that allow users to limit the number of AI-generated Pins appearing in their feed.
