Mozilla Adds AI Opt-In for Firefox, Emphasizing User Choice
November 19, 2025
Mozilla is the latest entry in the AI browser space with AI Window, an opt-in feature within Firefox that lets you chat with an AI assistant and get help while you browse. The company is currently taking sign-up requests for those who want to try it out and provide feedback. “Browsers made by AI companies ask you to make a hard choice — either use AI all the time or don’t use it at all,” Mozilla says, emphasizing a more fluid approach that lets users switch from the classic Firefox to a more “personalized experience” with AI Window.
“While others are building AI experiences that keep you locked in a conversational loop, we see a different path — one where AI serves as a trusted companion, enhancing your browsing experience and guiding you outward to the broader web,” Mozilla explains in an announcement that mentions other recent innovations like an AI chatbot in the sidebar for desktop and Shake to Summarize on iOS.

“Mozilla is putting an AI window into Firefox with a privacy twist,” writes Digital Trends, which calls the move “important because most browsers rolling out AI right now tend to be baked in and unavoidable,” calling some attempts over-automated.
“Mozilla’s approach flips that by putting you in control, letting you decide when AI shows up, and your normal browsing stays untouched,” Digital Trends notes, adding that:
- Your regular browsing doesn’t get cluttered with AI suggestions.
- You decide when the AI can see or help with the content in front of you.
- Mozilla’s “build in the open” approach means users can influence how AI Window evolves.
The Verge points out that “AI Window will be one of three browsing experiences offered to Firefox users in addition to the private and classic windows,” with the company explaining in a post to the Mozilla Connect forum “that users will be able to pick the AI model they want to use in AI Window.”
Last month the company announced it is “bringing AI answer engine Perplexity to Firefox, letting customers decide whether they want to use AI to search the web and find new information,” TechCrunch reported.
It’s all Mozilla’s way of helping to keep “AI like the Internet: open, accessible, and driven by choice.”
Those interested can sign up for AI Window as well as contribute to open-source projects through Mozilla Connect.
