Mixboard: Google Labs Testing Gemini AI Design Tool in Beta

Google Labs is experimenting with a new AI feature called Mixboard that lets people explore and develop design ideas. Users can visualize concepts ranging from home decor to event themes, or just about anything, for DIY projects or other creative pursuits. New projects can be launched from a text prompt or selected from pre-populated boards and developed by uploading images or using AI to generate them. “Create new versions of your ideas with one-click options like ‘regenerate’ and ‘more like this’,” explains Google, noting you can generate text based on content from any of the board’s images.

“Think of it as Pinterest for your most creative aspirations,” Tom’s Guide suggests, also likening it to Gemini Canvas for storyboarding. “This is very similar, but for visuals.”

Now in beta in the U.S., Mixboard can be edited using natural language with Nano Banana, an AI model that can generate images as well as execute editing instructions based on natural language. It is also built-into the Gemini AI app and part of Google AI Studio as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image,

Nano Banana is “essentially fluid editing that could rival competitors like Midjourney, Kling and more,” writes Tom’s Guide.

TechCrunch reports Nano Banana “has been enthusiastically received for its ability to handle more complex edits and make realistic images,” and credits it in part with helping Google’s Gemini AI app top the global app store charts, even knocking ChatGPT off the no. 1 position at Apple’s U.S. App Store.

PetaPixel says Mixboard is a tool that “could be useful to photographers,” noting that “conceptual and advertising photographers planning a shoot often turn to mood boards to help sculpt the aesthetic of their project.”

A mood board on a set “can be a handy reference point for … key visual cues like pose references, lighting angles, and tones,” PetaPixel writes, emphasizing that when digital, they are also easy to share with clients and collaborators. “It’s a fast way to show the vibe of the project, without relying on words alone.”

In a blog post, Google calls it “an early experiment” and says “we hope it will make it easier for anyone to use AI to explore their ideas.” Those interested can try it at labs.google/mixboard.
