DirecTV Leans into Streaming, Bringing It Under Main Banner
April 16, 2025
DirecTV is leaning even further into streaming despite its current decision to ditch its “Stream” branding. As of Sunday, the DirecTV Stream landing page had disappeared, its traffic rerouted to DirecTV.com. The emphasis is now on streaming on any device, “satellite-free and with no annual contract or hidden fees.” Choosing what to watch and how to watch it “should be simple,” which is why DirecTV says it’s now marketing under a single brand. The main messaging on the new landing page includes a build-your-own channel lineup option and streaming via DirecTV’s bespoke dongle Gemini Air.
And the free streaming service called MyFree DirecTV has just added eight more channels from NBCUniversal including the Bravo Vault, Top Chef Vault, SNL Vault and Real Housewives Vault, with “plans to add another four NBCU channels in the next few months,” reports TV Technology.
The eight new NBCU channels bring MyFree to a total of “more than 100 different networks, spanning all the most popular genres,” per TV Technology, which describes MyFree DirecTV as “a baseline service for consumers to engage with the DirecTV streaming experience and build their own programming lineups more customized to the specific genres of content.”
There are also pre-fashioned Genre Packs like MySports, MyNews and MyEntertainment, starting at $35 per month.
That totals three types of program offerings: free and FAST, for-fee Genre Packs, and the premium Signature tier. “Select the content you want to stream at the price you want to pay,” DirecTV explains in an announcement, specifying that “each offering is available month-to-month and designed to evolve with your viewing preferences.”
StreamTV Insider points out that DirecTV is “now under the guidance of private equity firm TPG Inc. following complete divesture last year by AT&T.” Notwithstanding, DirecTV has “been steadily moving toward app-based distribution of its services for several years, providing satellite TV only to customers in rural areas that can’t get reliable broadband.”
While its new owner doesn’t share subscriber metrics, in September it was reported that DirecTV had roughly 11 million subscribers across streaming and satellite pay TV, as well as its U-verse IPTV platform. “DirecTV Stream, it’s vMVPD offering, has been where most new customers have been directed for several years now,” StreamTV Insider notes.
In addition to Gemini, customers can stream using their own compatible streaming device — from Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Roku — or a combination of them, according to DirecTV.
