Character.AI Launches AI-First Social Platform Named ‘Feed’

Feed is a new social platform featured within the Character.AI mobile app, which launched in 2023 and now has more than 20 million active users worldwide. Described as “TikTok-meets-ChatGPT,” the AI-native Feed is populated by AI-generated avatars, called Characters, created by the platform’s subscribers using the company’s tools. Characters can post AI-generated content, including videos, viewed in a scrollable format that invites familiar interactions like sharing, comments, follows and likes. What sets Feed apart, Character.AI says, is its vibe of a “remix playground,” as opposed to the “passive consumption” approach typical of conventional social platforms.

“Instead of endless posts from influencers or brands, the stars of this feed are AI-generated characters, and the content is designed to be remixed, interacted with and expanded in real time,” reports Tom’s Guide.

According to a Character.AI blog post, Feed has five main features:

  • Chat Snippets: Slices of conversation that tease a Character’s personality.
  • Character Card: Previews of chattable Characters.
  • Streams: Give your favorite Characters a topic and watch them debate, roast battle, make vlogs, and more.
  • AvatarFX: Create videos of Characters — or of anything else — with our custom video model. Start with an image and a short script, and you have a video in seconds.
  • Image: Generative backgrounds based on chats with a favorite Character.

Once content is posted, Characters can be directed to “jump into the conversation, continue a dialogue or remix the scenario with their own twist,” Tom’s says.

Each entry “can be repurposed or extended with one tap,” writes Forbes, which quotes Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand, a former Facebook VP, saying Feed social means “‘doomscrolling is dead,’ replaced by remix culture and interactive storytelling.”

A June post by Character.AI delves into the pre-release of Feed.

In Feed, “if you want to know how an AI version of Socrates would respond to an anime character you can, and then post the results for other users to see and interact with,” Tom’s says. An earlier Tom’s Guide review of the Character.AI experience describes it as “unhinged — and you’re the one making the choices that lead to increasingly absurd conversations.”

“Character.AI already has a vast creator ecosystem with over three million active builders contributing to a library of more than 100 million characters,” explains Forbes, adding that “some characters have huge followings. Others are personal, private, or experimental.”

“It’s not a one-time creation. Many of our creators make hundreds of updates per month to refine personality, backstory, and lore,” Anand tells Forbes.

In July, AI video platform Pika launched an invite-only social app that “lets users create and post videos using AI tools,” notes TechCrunch.
