CES 2013: HP Unveils $129 Mobile Wireless Storage Expander

The HP Pocket Playlist is a surprising little drive HP is demonstrating at CES this year. It’s a portable storage device that allows for the streaming of unencrypted content to up to five mobile devices at one time. The company says it can hold up to 16 full-length movies, 7,600 songs, 10,000 photos, or any combination of those (assuming 2GB per movie, 4.3MB per song, 3.2MB per photo).

“It works with apps, too, starting with a free one-month subscription to PlayLater — record media such as Hulu or Netflix shows and movies and play them later for free on your many multiple devices,” writes Slashgear. The PlayLater DVR app has an annual cost of $29.99 after the first free month expires.

The 32GB pocket drive should prove interesting competition to devices such as the Seagate Satellite, Wireless Plus, or the Kingston Wi-Drive. According to the press release, there is no Internet connection required while streaming content and no need for a data plan.

The Pocket Playlist includes a built-in battery and Wireless-N access point and connects to most Wi-Fi capable devices running Android, Windows Phone or iOS. It will be available in the U.S. by February for $129.
