Apple Unveils New iPhone 17 Line, Watches and AirPods Pro

During its latest live-streamed event yesterday, Apple debuted new product models, including the iPhone 17 Air, the company’s first ultra-slim smartphone. Made of titanium, it’s priced at $1,000. The entry level of the group, the iPhone 17, costs the same as the iPhone 16, at $800, with an improved display and double the storage (256GB). Fully loaded, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the company’s most expensive phone ever at $2,000 with 2TB of storage and a 6.9-inch OLED screen. All four models come with a 48MP rear camera, while the new A19 Pro chipset powers the 17 Pro, Pro Max and Air. Apple also unveiled a new collection of smartwatches and the AirPods Pro 3.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s triple camera setup features a 4x optical zoom at 100mm for classic portraiture and an 8x optical zoom at 200mm, “the longest ever on iPhone,” Apple explains in a post introducing the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The updated Photonic Engine uses machine learning “to preserve natural detail, reduce noise, and provide significantly improved color accuracy,” according to Apple.

Meanwhile, “the selfie snapper has been upgraded with a 18MP ‘Center Stage’ camera” on the two models, writes Digital Trends, which calls the iPhone 17 pricing “good news,” because the price on the entry level phones in each of the returning categories remains the same, with more for the money.

The iPhone 17’s Center Stage front camera enables ultra-stabilized video in 4K HDR at up to 60 fps, “and users can now record on the front and rear cameras simultaneously with Dual Capture,” Apple says in an iPhone 17 release. It marks the first time an entry level model has a 48MP rear camera. The 6.3-inch display has the same max 120Hz refresh rate and 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness as the other three models.

CNET compares the features of all four models, calling the thinness of the 5.6mm thick 17 Air — which “takes the place of the iPhone 16 Plus as the larger non-Pro model” — the biggest design change and comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, lamenting that “it offers only a single main rear camera.”

Apple also unveiled three new smartwatches. Starting at $800, the Watch Ultra 3 has new satellite communications, multiday battery life, 5G, dual-frequency GPS and more. The Watch SE 3 (starting at $250) has faster charging, while the health-oriented Watch Series 11 is available for $400 and up.

USA Today compares the models and mentions “watchOS 26 was also announced with enhanced fitness, sleek new watch faces and tools like Live Translation.”

Rounding out the offerings, the AirPods Pro 3 also come with language translation thanks to iOS 26, reports TechCrunch, noting that they also have heart rate sensing, a first for Apple earwear.

Preorders start this week, with all products arriving September 19.
