Google Optimizes Play Store for Games, Adds Personalization
September 25, 2025
Google is giving the Play Store an AI makeover with a new strategy behind Play Games and a new You tab for personalized content. A new Guided Search feature will help users find apps and games by typing in keywords or a generalized description rather than the app’s name. The hope is that artificial intelligence can turn the mobile marketplace into more of a destination rather than just a place to download apps. More than 4 billion people use Google Play, and the company would like to have them spend more time there. Play’s integrated gaming platform and You tab will begin rolling out this week, starting with select Play Points markets, and will be adding additional countries on October 1.
“The Play Store’s Apps tab is also being updated to include new ‘curated spaces’ dedicated to seasonal topics and those tailored to a user’s interests,” writes TechCrunch, explaining that “these could pull in content from multiple apps” to populate suggestions for topics of interest.
“In Korea, we’re launching a new entertainment-dedicated space in the Apps tab” that “brings together movies, TV shows and short-form dramas optimized to enjoy on mobile,” Google explains in a blog post, adding that in the U.S., “users can now sample short-form dramas, webcomics and trending TV and movies from the Apps tab.”
The format follows success Google Play has had with things like Cricket Hub in India and the Comics space in Japan, which now has nearly one million users, according to Google.
The new You tab “will offer a centralized place for tracking subscriptions, rewards (like Play Points), recommendations, stats, and updates,” reports TechCrunch. This tab will be geared toward discovery and personalized recommendations related to interests or what’s new, “such as tailored audiobook recommendations,” Google says, noting “you will soon be able to jump back into content you’ve already started, so you can pick up where you left off on a novel or podcast.”
Cross-device gameplay is being added to the Google Play Games tab as the platform’s PC offering segues out of a test phase, writes Variety, adding that “Google’s newly integrated gaming platform will roll out a ‘Play Games Sidekick’ feature in the coming months.” Google describes this as “a helpful in-game overlay available while playing games downloaded from Play.”
The Sidekick tool “‘curates and organizes relevant gaming info’ and offers ‘direct access’ to Google’s AI service, Gemini Live, for ‘real-time guidance, so you can stay in the game,’” Variety adds.
