UCL Researchers Claim Internet Transmission Speed Record

At the Electronic & Electrical Engineering department of University College London (UCL), Dr. Lidia Galdino and her research team worked with Xtera and KDDI Research to achieve an Internet transmission rate of 178 terabits per second (178,000,000 megabits per second). This speed represents double the capacity of any other system operating today and would enable a user to download the entire Netflix library in less than one second. UCL and its partners achieved this by transmitting data through a much wider range of wavelengths than typically used in optical fiber. BBC Launches Research Collaboration in User Experience

The BBC announced on Thursday the BBC User Experience Research Partnership, a collaboration between BBC Research and Development and several universities, which involves research in User Experience and Human Computer Interaction. The initiative will develop pilot programs and prototypes, and will share its results. It also builds upon the BBC R&D’s strong record of collaboration, and focuses on strategies for the BBC and media industries. Continue reading BBC Launches Research Collaboration in User Experience

Computer Mimics Randomness in Nature to Repair Itself

A new computer now operating at University College London mimics the randomness found in nature and can instantly recover from crashes by repairing its own corrupted data. Such a machine could be instrumental in keeping mission-critical systems working at all times in the face of technological breakdowns. For example, it could allow drones to reprogram themselves in the face of combat damage. Continue reading Computer Mimics Randomness in Nature to Repair Itself
