Microsoft’s Bing mobile search app for Android and iOS is adding a free Bing Video Creator feature powered by OpenAI’s Sora. Text-to-video model Sora was previously available only by subscription through ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month or the $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro. The integration will enable creation of five-second vertical video clips on mobile, with horizontal capability coming soon. Although a major investor in OpenAI, Microsoft has made headway with its own signature AI offerings, including Bing Image Creator and the Copilot AI assistant. The Bing Mobile app is available worldwide via the App Store for iOS and the Play Store for Android.
“Powered by Sora, Bing Video Creator transforms your text prompts into short videos. Just describe what you want to see and watch your vision come to life,” Microsoft Corporate VP and Head of Search Jordi Ribas announced on X. “Two years ago, Bing was the first product to ship image creation for free for our users.”
Sora can create video of up to 60 seconds from prompts consisting of text, natural language, image or video clips, but in addition to being abbreviated in length, the Bing mobile integration will only respond to text prompts.
“The initial 9:16 portrait format “is perfect for TikTok and YouTube Shorts,” writes VentureBeat, going on to muse that “while not an enterprise product itself, the technology behind it could inspire new ways to incorporate video generation into business workflows, such as creating automated video summaries, training content, or marketing materials.”
ZDNet explains there are two speeds for creating a video — standard and fast: “the standard speed lets you freely conjure as many videos as you want, but a single video can take hours to generate.” After 10 fast generations, standard speed kicks in unless you redeem Microsoft Points (100 per additional quick iteration) through the Microsoft Rewards website.
“You can queue up to three different video generations at the same time, which the video creator will tackle one after the other,” ZDNet notes. “If all three slots are currently being used, you’ll have to wait until one opens up before starting another video request.”
Microsoft explains how to use the Bing Video Creator in an introductory blog post that provides impressive sample clips.
