DJI Osmo Action 6 Camera’s Variable Aperture Called a First
November 25, 2025
DJI’s Osmo Action 6 is its first variable aperture action camera, offering f/2.0 to f/4.0. Coupled with a new 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensor, DJI promises better low-light imaging with dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops. The new flagship-level also has a 4K custom mode that leverages the large sensor to allow users to “shoot first and crop later in post-production” to frame images, making it easy to edit for different aspect ratios and social platforms. “Creators no longer need to manually position the camera horizontally and vertically to get their shot,” according to DJI.
Noting that the Osmo Action 6 model is drone camera specialty firm DJI’s “third action cam in less than four months,” Engadget reports this GoPro rival offers some unique features, led by the variable f/2.0-4.0 aperture, “which offers several benefits” over the fixed f/2.8.

PetaPixel calls the Osmo Action 6 “the first action camera with this capability,” a point on which Engadget agrees.
The f/2.0 setting lets in twice as much light as the prior fixed setting, allowing for faster shutter speeds, reducing motion blur and improving image stabilization in dim conditions. “It also delivers shallower depth of field to help separate the subject from the background,” Engadget points out, emphasizing that conversely, in bright light an aperture of f/4.0 “lets you lower the shutter speed so video looks less staccato and more natural.”
The Osmo Action 6 only offers the f/2.0-4.0 range as an automatic setting, however. Those who want a fixed aperture must opt for f/2.8, Engadget laments.
“The camera can capture up to 4K/120fps videos in a 4:3 aspect ratio, but its slow-motion capabilities improve to 240fps with the resolution reduced to 1080p, and can be boosted to up to 960fps using interpolation to generate additional in-between frames,” explains The Verge, noting that internal storage is 50GB, expandable to 1TB with a microSD card.
An optional Macro Lens accessory moves the minimum focusing distance from 13.8 inches to 4.3 inches, while “an optional FOV Boost Lens enables shooting with a 182-degree field of view, up from 155-degrees” for more immersive POV action shots, writes PetaPixel.
DJI’s announcement lists numerous accessories for the Osmo Action 6.
The Verge points out that China-based DJI has not announced a U.S. release for the Osmo Action 6. Third-party sellers, including Samy’s Camera and B&H Photo, list it for $379 in a standard configuration.
