Disney Invests in Webtoon with New Comics Platform Planned

The Walt Disney Company has teamed up with Webtoon Entertainment to create a new digital comics platform that will host more than 35,000 Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, Pixar and 20th Century Studios digital comic books, including current runs and archival issues from decades past as well as original new material. The deal sees Disney taking a two percent stake in Webtoon, which will run the new venture. Disney+ subscribers will have access to a curated selection of material as part of their subscription through Disney+ Perks. The format will include a mix of vertical and traditional screen presentations.

Disney and Webtoons last month struck an agreement to put almost 100 classic comics as well as new online series on the online-comic platform, refitted for vertical-scroll.

“Now, Webtoon will be building and operating a new platform for Disney’s more than 35,000 comics that can be accessed with one subscription,” reports The Wall Street Journal, describing the current joint venture deal as “a non-binding term sheet” while the companies work toward a definitive agreement.

Gizmodo explains that the new as yet unnamed platform “will be set up to replace Marvel Unlimited, the publisher’s digital comics platform and subscription service that first launched in 2007.”

Disney will be aiming for “wide distribution” for the new outlet with “select comics localized for Webtoon’s Korean and Japanese platforms.”

Webtoon itself claims 155 million monthly active users. The company has its roots in South Korea, but is based in Los Angeles, where in 2004 it began pioneering a mobile webcomic format for mobile devices that has become a home for visual storytelling for fans and creators worldwide.

“With a new platform that will combine our product and technical expertise with Disney’s full comic catalog, we’re giving new and longtime fans all over the world a new way to discover these legendary characters and stories,” Webtoon Entertainment founder and CEO Junkoo Kim said in an announcement, adding that the two companies will together “build the future of digital comics.”

Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro said the new venture unites the studio’s “unparalleled collection of comics” in a single outlet that fans will love, while also engaging “new audiences and deepening fan engagement.”

“Spider-Man, Captain America, Darth Vader, Beauty and the Beast, and more from Disney’s intellectual-property treasure chest” are among the legendary entertainers Variety lists as heading to the new digital platform.
