Baylor University 6P Color Project Reveals Business Strategy

Baylor University’s Film & Digital Media Department just introduced a proposed multi-primary color system, dubbed 6P Color. Led by professors Corey Carbonara and Michael Korpi, the core team also includes cinematographer Steven Poster, ASC; Gary Mandle, Jim DeFilippis, Gary Feather and Dr. Mitch Bogdanowicz. On June 3, the team made their case — via streaming platform SMPTE+ — on why the standard RGB three-color triangle would benefit by the addition of new primaries. Baylor Launches 6P Color Imaging System at SMPTE+ Event

At Baylor University’s Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC), Baylor film and digital media professors Corey Carbonara and Michael Korpi and senior research scientist Gary Mandle introduced 6P Color, the fruits of three years of research into exploring the creation of a wider color gamut image. The daylong virtual and in-person event was also the flagship launch of SMPTE+, the organization’s new channel for content and networking, introduced by SMPTE president Hans Hoffman and executive director Barbara Lange. “Expanding the Color Universe: The Next Frontier in Imaging” was the inaugural event in the new SMPTE+ Series. SMPTE 2015: Challenges of Adding HDR, HFR and Color to 4K

At the SMPTE 2015 annual conference, broadcast consultant Jim DeFilippis, Grass Valley camera executive Klaus Weber, and Panasonic researcher Hiroaki Iwasaki, among others, looked at the challenges involved with adding higher frame rates, higher dynamic range and wider color gamut for 4K resolution and beyond. Baylor University professors Corey Carbonara and Michael Korpi attempted to find the perfect amount of frame rates, exposure times, lighting, and refresh rates to arrive at the best image.
