Google AI Edge Gallery App Runs Models Locally on Android

Google has quietly released the AI Edge Gallery app, which lets users download models and run them locally without Internet connectivity. Available for Android and eventually on iOS, the experimental app is hosted on GitHub where it can be downloaded for free. Users can find compatible models capable of running on-device, like Google’s Gemma 3n, and run them offline to do things like generate images, get answers to questions, and write and edit code using the processor of supported smartphones. While locally running models aren’t as powerful as their cloud counterparts, they offer more privacy and can sometimes be faster. Agentic Browser Opera Neon Available Soon via Subscription

The Norwegian browser company behind Opera is working on an AI-powered version with agentic powers. Called Opera Neon, users can chat using the browser’s native integrated AI agent that will search the web, get answers and provide context for webpages. To do this, Opera Neon draws on previously showcased Opera tech called Browser Operator, which automates routine web tasks like form completion, hotel bookings and even some shopping functions. “Neon performs these tasks locally in the browser, preserving users’ privacy and security,” according to Opera. Salesforce Agrees to Buy Data Firm Informatica for $8 Billion

Salesforce has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire AI-powered cloud data management Informatica for $8 billion. The move will boost Salesforce’s presence in the enterprise space, combining two large, established software firms. Salesforce says the move will enhance its ability to deliver agentic AI via “Informatica’s rich data catalog, data integration, governance, quality and privacy, metadata management, and Master Data Management (MDM) services.” Informatica will help the Salesforce platform establish “a unified architecture for agentic AI — enabling AI agents to operate safely, responsibly, and at scale across the modern enterprise,” according to Salesforce. DGX Cloud Lepton: Nvidia’s New GPU Compute Marketplace

Nvidia is rolling out DGX Cloud Lepton, a platform that connects AI developers with GPU access available through various cloud providers. Nvidia calls it “a compute marketplace” that offers tens of thousands of GPUs through a global network that features Nvidia Cloud Partners (NCPs). Among them: CoreWeave, Crusoe, Firmus, Foxconn, GMI Cloud, Lambda, Nebius, Nscale, Softbank Corp. and Yotta Data Services — offering Nvidia Blackwell and other architecture GPUs. Developers can tap into GPU compute capacity in specific regions for both on-demand and long-term computing, Nvidia says, adding that it expects leading cloud computing providers to eventually sign on. Lightricks LTXV Makes Video Generation Faster and Cheaper

Lightricks, the company behind the Facetune and Videoleap apps, has released a new video model called LTX Video, or LTXV, that generates what the company describes as high-quality AI video at speeds up to 30 times faster than competing products, and does it using consumer-grade hardware. The open-source, 13-billion parameter model achieves such efficiency by utilizing an approach called multiscale rendering, which generates video in progressively detailed layers. The program can run on high-end laptops and standard desktop computers, opening up generative video to an audience beyond those who have access to enterprise equipment. Microsoft Reduces Spending on AI but Momentum Continues

Microsoft has “tapped on the brakes” of its spending on artificial intelligence, reducing capital expenses by more than $1 billion in the first three months of 2025. But after 10 straight quarters of increased AI outlay, momentum continues to propel the sector forward with new data center commitments in 16 countries and the expansion of the Phi small language family with the debut of Phi-4 (that supports text, visual and voice inputs). The moves come on the heels of $70 billion in sales for the first three months of 2025, when profits were up 18 percent to $25.8 billion. Roku Teams Up with Adobe on a Real-Time Ad Data Platform

Roku is partnering with Adobe to integrate its Roku Data Cloud with Adobe Real-Time Customer Data Platform (CDP) for a new real-time advertising data platform. The idea is to allow advertisers to access more in-depth insights that can potentially be used to launch “more personalized and performant advertising” while prioritizing privacy, according to Roku. “This integration will unlock the opportunity for traditional performance marketers — like search and social buyers — to plan, activate, and measure campaigns on Roku,” said Miles Fisher, the streamer’s senior director of strategic advertising partnerships. Google Ironwood TPU is Made for Inference and ‘Thinking’ AI

Google has debuted a new accelerator chip, Ironwood, a tensor processing unit designed specifically for inference — the ability of AI to predict things. Ironwood will power Google Cloud’s AI Hypercomputer, which runs the company’s Gemini models and is gearing up for the next generation of artificial intelligence workloads. Google’s TPUs are similar to the accelerator GPUs sold by Nvidia, but unlike the GPUs they’re designed for AI and geared toward speeding neural network tasks and mathematical operations. Google Pushes Gemini in Android Studio for App Developers

Google’s Gemini coding assistant has gained agentic capabilities, available as part of Gemini in Android Studio, a subscription service for businesses designed to make app development for the Android ecosystem easier and more secure. This agent-centric “AI-powered cloud for developers and operators” is designed to infuse AI into all stages of application development, laying the groundwork for more rapid software creation cycles. Google Debuts Next-Gen Reasoning Models with Gemini 2.5

Google has released what it calls its most intelligent AI model yet, Gemini 2.5. The first 2.5 model release, an experimental version of Gemini 2.5 Pro, is a next-gen reasoning model that Google says outperformed OpenAI o3-mini and Claude 3.7 Sonnet from Anthropic on common benchmarks “by meaningful margins.” Gemini 2.5 models “are thinking models, capable of reasoning through their thoughts before responding, resulting in enhanced performance and improved accuracy,” according to Google. Softbank Agrees to Acquire Chipmaker Ampere for $6.5 Billion

Japanese tech investment firm Softbank has agreed to acquire Silicon Valley chip startup Ampere for $6.5 billion, indicating that technology originating in smartphones will eventually become integral to global data centers and the future of artificial intelligence. The eight-year-old Ampere sells chips based on Arm technology, the processor type used in virtually all mobile phones. SoftBank purchased Arm in 2016 and has since been working to ensure the technology becomes used more broadly. Google Agrees to Buy Cybersecurity Startup Wiz for $32 Billion

Google has acquired Wiz, a multi-cloud security firm that will remain cloud-agnostic under its new ownership. In fact, the ability to expand its customer base to companies that use competing cloud services like AWS or Azure was a key incentive for Google to buy the five-year-old startup, whose mandate is “to help every organization secure everything they build and run in the cloud — any cloud.” Google agreed to pay $32 billion for the New York-based firm, which had annual revenue of $700 million last year and was on track to increase that to $1 billion in 2025. Baidu Releases New LLMs that Undercut Competition’s Price

Baidu has launched two new AI systems, the native multimodal foundation model Ernie 4.5 and deep-thinking reasoning model Ernie X1. The latter supports features like generative imaging, advanced search and webpage content comprehension. Baidu is touting Ernie X1 as of comparable performance to another Chinese model, DeepSeek-R1, but says it is half the price. Both Baidu models are available to the public, including individual users, through the Ernie website. Salesforce Brings Gemini to Agentforce in $2.5B Google Deal

In an expansion of their existing strategic partnership, Salesforce and Google have entered into a seven-year, $2.5 billion deal that will allow Salesforce customers to build Agentforce agents using Gemini and to deploy Salesforce on Google Cloud. The companies plan to more tightly integrate connections between platforms like Salesforce Service Cloud and Google Cloud’s Customer Engagement Suite, as well as Slack and Google Workspace, “empowering AI agents and service representatives with unified data access, streamlined workflows, and advanced AI capabilities, regardless of platform,” the companies said. LG Rolls Out Its All-in-One Gaming Portal to Multiple Platforms

LG Electronics is expanding distribution of the Gaming Portal unveiled at CES 2025 for LG Smart TVs. LG says that since that curtain-raiser, the platform has become available in 19 global markets for LG Smart TVs running webOS 23 and above. Starting in Q2, it will become available in additional markets on devices including LG Smart Monitors and StanbyME lifestyle screens. The LG Gaming Portal has partnerships with cloud game services including Xbox, Nvidia GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna, as well as the lesser-known Boosteroid, Blacknut and some native webOS app games.
