OpenAI Acquires Product-Testing Firm Statsig for $1.1 Billion

OpenAI is purchasing software-testing startup Statsig in a deal reportedly worth $1.1 billion and has named its founder and CEO Vijaye Raji the ChatGPT-maker’s CTO of Applications as part of the move to build out that division, announced in May under CEO Fidji Simo, who previously ran Instacart. Reporting to Simo, Raji will head product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex “with responsibilities that span core systems and product lines including infrastructure and integrity,” said OpenAI, a client of Statsig, whose services include powering A/B testing, feature flagging, and “real-time decisioning.” Continue reading OpenAI Acquires Product-Testing Firm Statsig for $1.1 Billion

Cognition Acquires Windsurf Following Google Licensing Deal

Google scuttled OpenAI’s negotiations to purchase AI coding firm Windsurf (formerly Codeium), by agreeing to pay roughly $2.4 billion to license the startup’s core technology, hire co-founder and CEO Varun Mohan and bring a passel of employees with him to Alphabet. The license is non-exclusive and Google is not taking a stake in Windsurf. Days after the Google deal, AI startup Cognition announced it would be acquiring Windsurf (both startups are backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund). Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen and some members of the Windsurf R&D team are moving to Google to work primarily with DeepMind on agentic coding. Google Acquires Mobile Startup Polar to Reinvigorate Google+

Google has acquired mobile startup Polar, to bring the founder Luke Wroblewski and his team to Google+. Polar developed online polling technology for clients such as HBO, TechCrunch and USA Today to poll their users on mobile websites and apps. At Google, the new hires are expected to work on optimizing Google’s struggling social network for the mobile platform.
