Smarter Planet: IBM Details Five Tech Areas That Mirror Human Senses

IBM’s annual 5 in 5 spotlights innovative technologies. This year the list focuses on technologies that mirror human senses: Touch, Sight, Hearing, Taste and Smell.

1) Touch: Within the next five years, shoppers will be able to feel textures of the items they shop for, according to IBM.

2) Sight: Computers may soon be able to recognize items in photographs, as researchers work to send billions of photographs through computers. The computers recognize patterns in the images and can learn to “see.”

3) Hearing: Scientists have already developed technology that analyzes baby sounds and can help determine how the baby feels at that moment. It collects data from baby brains at various points in development and compares it to the sounds.

4) Taste: While many think of cooking as an art, “good” meals can be broken down chemically to explain what exactly made the meal taste so great. This could lead to new recipes made by science, not by chefs.

5) Smell: “Tiny sensors that ‘smell’ can be integrated into cell phones and other mobile devices, feeding information contained on the biomarkers to a computer system that can analyze the data,” writes IBM. These sensors will help alert people that they are getting sick, or even if they have a serious condition like liver or kidney disease.
