AWS Frontier Agents Can Work for Days Without Human Help

AI agents that can work for days on end without human direction and new Nova 2 models were the big announcements on day two of AWS re:Invent, where Amazon also introduced Nova Forge, a service that lets companies build their own models. The autonomous agents include Kiro for software development, the AWS Security Agent to protect against cyber threats and the AWS DevOps Agent, which monitors and improves the performance of applications across AWS, multi-cloud and hybrid environments. Amazon explains they are part of a new class of “frontier agents” that are autonomous, can operate for hours or days without requiring intervention, and are scalable.

Frontier agents are capable of multitasking and can delegate work across multiple agents, Amazon notes in a news post. The high-stamina frontier agents are less like assistants that can help with individual tasks than team members that can complete complex projects autonomously.

While the Kiro software announced in July works for vibe coding, the Kiro agent works with it, observing and ingesting the team’s workstyle and tool use, “scanning existing code, among other training means,” TechCrunch reports. After that, it can work independently.

“You can ask it questions, describe a task, and assign tasks in your backlog directly from GitHub,” Amazon says of the Kiro agent, noting they will share changes as proposed edits and pull requests, “so you stay in control of what gets incorporated.”

The AWS Security Agent identifies security problems “as code is written, tests it after the fact, and then offers suggested fixes,” writes TechCrunch. The AWS DevOps Agent tests new code in a staging environment, evaluating compatibility with other software, hardware, or cloud settings and identifying performance issues.

Amazon also debuted four new Nova 2 models, releasing two: Nova 2 Lite, a reasoning model for “everyday tasks”  and Nova 2 Pro, its “most intelligent reasoning model” for complex problem solving and things like agentic coding and long-range planning.

In preview are Nova 2 Sonic, a speech-to-speech model that unifies text and speech understanding and generation for human-like conversational AI and Nova 2 Omni, a multimodal reasoning and generation model that can process text, images, video, and speech inputs while generating both text and images, which Amazon says is “an industry first.”

The Nova Forge service lets customers build models they can deploy on Amazon Bedrock. Companies including Sony, Reddit and Booking.com are already building their own models using Nova Forge “to better serve their unique requirements,” Amazon adds in an announcement.

With Nova Forge, AWS allows companies to imbue their models with “more personalization and internal knowledge,” VentureBeat points out. Nova Forge provides “a path to build foundation-class models” without having to invest in masses of GPUs.
