ESPN Announces Its New Streaming App Will Launch This Fall

Disney’s ESPN all-access streaming app, priced at $30 per month for an “unlimited” package, will roll out this fall. Those who subscribe as part of a Disney+ and Hulu ad-supported bundle will get all three services for $36 per month, discounted to $30 per month for customers who sign up at launch. Included in the new app — simply named “ESPN” — will be live NFL, NBA, college football and basketball games as well as programming from sister services ESPN2, the SEC Network and ESPN on ABC. The package will also feature new betting tie-ins, fantasy products, documentaries and studio programming. A “select” plan starts at $12 per month. All-In FOX One Streaming Platform to Launch Later This Year

FOX One is the brand name of the aggregated portfolio of FOX’s direct-to-consumer streaming products, due to launch this fall as a subscription service ahead of the NFL and college football seasons. The package bundles FOX sports, news and entertainment content including cable and local stations and the FOX broadcast network. Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch floated the news during Monday’s earnings call, also reporting that revenue was up 27 percent year-over-year to $4.37 billion. NBCU Enhances Streaming Features for Peacock NBA Debut

Peacock wants to be the place to watch basketball this fall when the NBA makes its debut on the streamer with the 2025-2026 season. As the result of an integration between the platform and the NBC Sports production team, Peacock will give basketball fans special functions that make watching NBA games more convenient in their living rooms or on their phones. Multiview and key plays, two popular YouTube features, are coming to the NBA on Peacock. The idea is to provide viewers with an immersive NBA experience. Netflix Highlights Original Shows in New Vertical Shorts Feed

Netflix is testing a short-form video feature for mobile to compete for the attention of those spending time on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. The news came out of the company’s inaugural product and tech event where it also shared plans for an OpenAI-powered search tool that lets users describe their desired content conversationally. Netflix plans to introduce improved real-time recommendations and a redesigned TV homepage, rolling out globally in the coming weeks and months, according to Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim, who presided over the event with Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone. Disney Reports Strong Quarter, Announces New Theme Park

Disney revenue hit $23.6 billion during the recent quarter, a 7 percent increase year-over-year, with net income vaulting to $3.28 billion, up from a $20 million loss during the same period last year. The results outperformed on the top and bottom lines, sending shares surging by about 10 percent on Wednesday morning. Disney’s strong fiscal second quarter was propelled by better-than-expected Disney+ subscriber growth of +1.4 million subscribers and energetic overall performances in Entertainment as well as Experiences. DirecTV Leans into Streaming, Bringing It Under Main Banner

DirecTV is leaning even further into streaming despite its current decision to ditch its “Stream” branding. As of Sunday, the DirecTV Stream landing page had disappeared, its traffic rerouted to DirecTV.com.  The emphasis is now on streaming on any device, “satellite-free and with no annual contract or hidden fees.” Choosing what to watch and how to watch it “should be simple,” which is why DirecTV says it’s now marketing under a single brand. The main messaging on the new landing page includes a build-your-own channel lineup option and streaming via DirecTV’s bespoke dongle Gemini Air. Vimeo Streaming Helps Creators Build Subscription Platforms

Vimeo is launching Vimeo Streaming, a turnkey platform that allows businesses, creators, and just about anyone to create and monetize their own branded streaming service. The announcement was timed to the 2025 NAB Show. Vimeo suggests the new offering — described as “a technological leap forward for content and media businesses” — is the next generation of its existing over-the-top product that is already helping creators earn $429 million per month. The approach is similar to YouTube with more design flexibility and brand control, but living on the Web, outside the cozy confines of social media with its built-in audiences. Apple TV App Is Available via Google Play for Android Devices

The long-awaited Apple TV app for Android mobile devices has officially launched on the Google Play Store, providing Android users access to original series and movies on Apple TV+ (currently offered as a seven-day free trial), in addition to MLS Season Pass (in time for Major League Soccer’s 2025 season that begins the weekend of February 22). Apple TV+ also offers a Major League Baseball double-header on Fridays with no local broadcast restrictions. Subscriptions to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass are available through Google Play accounts for Android mobile and Google TV devices. The Apple TV+ subscription presently runs $9.99 per month. NASCAR has added a new experience that gives spectators a view from race car cockpits with its new “Driver Cam.” Courtesy of TNT Sports and streaming service Max, NASCAR fans were able to see and hear what went on from the driver POV behind the wheel, choosing from among up to 40 vehicles at the 2025 Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina this past weekend. NHL Is Turning Players into Avatars in Game Recaps for Kids

The National Hockey League is testing an animated recap show aimed at drawing young viewers. “NHL Hockeyverse Matchup of the Week” uses NHL Edge Positional Data to turn NHL player into avatars, creating “a visualization of the on-ice action with stunning realism and dynamic movements,” the league says. The half-hour show premiered February 1 featuring a recap of a January 25 game between the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals. Episodes air on the NHL Network and on the NHL YouTube channel in the U.S. and on Sportsnet in Canada and are expected to continue in the Saturday slot. Netflix Increases Subscription Prices as Memberships Surge

Netflix seems determined to test consumers’ price-value tolerance, raising by $2 the price of its premium tier, now $24.99 per month, while raising the cost of the standard ad-supported tier by $1, to $7.99 per month. Its approach is so far working. The news came with an earnings report that indicated new subscribers rose by 18.9 million in Q4, a 44 percent increase to 302 million worldwide members on close of 2024. For the year, revenue grew 16 percent and operating income expanded six points to 27 percent, exceeding $10 billion for the first time in company history. CES: Canon Updates Its Volumetric X Motion Capture System

The Canon Americas Lab exhibit at CES this year featured a demonstration of Canon USA’s Volumetric X Motion Capture system that creates videos viewable from any camera angle. The multi-camera system leverages 2D data, 3D volumetric data, and analytical tools for sports and entertainment applications. The basis of the system is the same as the Free Viewpoint video system — Canon’s CES 2023 headliner — which was used in an NBA pilot for Cleveland Cavaliers’ alternative game stream. We checked in with the project’s researchers for updates, including ESPN highlights on Meta’s Xtadium VR app, a new U.S. volumetric studio, and how AI was used in this technology. In the conference track of CES this year is a lineup of talks and panels on gaming and esports. During the “Generational Shifts: The Evolution of Gaming” panel, moderated by Consumer Technology Association (CTA) Senior Manager of Market Research Steven Hummel, industry executives and thought leaders shared their views on market trends emerging post-pandemic and how those trends are driving gaming across other media. While it is not surprising to hear that the average age of gamers tends to skew younger these days, perhaps the bigger takeaway is that gaming has become the new social media for many. CAA to Help YouTube Develop an AI Deepfake Removal Tool

YouTube has partnered with Creative Artists Agency to develop technology that will help celebrities identify and remove deepfake videos created by AI to exploit their images. YouTube announced the tech in September and has now gained CAA’s support in the form of “critical feedback to help us build our detection systems and refine the controls.” In exchange, “several of the world’s most influential figures will have access to early-stage technology designed to identify and manage AI-generated content that features their likeness, including their face, on YouTube at scale,” the streamer announced. Twelve Labs Creating AI That Can Search and Analyze Video

Twelve Labs has raised $30 million in funding for its efforts to train video-analyzing models. The San Francisco-based company has received strategic investments from notable enterprise infrastructure providers Databricks and SK Telecom as well as Snowflake Ventures and HubSpot Ventures. Twelve Labs targets customers using video across a variety of fields including media and entertainment, professional sports leagues, content creators and business users. The funding coincides with the release of Twelve Labs’ new video foundation model, Marengo 2.7, which applies a multi-vector approach to video understanding.
