Google Adds Deep Research, New File Types to NotebookLM

Google is adding Deep Research to its AI-powered writing and research assistant NotebookLM, adding agentic capabilities that transform it to an autonomous research agent that can find and evaluate information on its own. Previously NotebookLM was limited to retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Now, led by your questions, Deep Research browses hundreds of websites, refining its search as it learns, generating within minutes an organized, source-grounded report that can be added to your notebook. Google is also adding support for more file types, including photos — allowing you to upload snapshots of notes — Google Sheets and Microsoft Word documents. Google Is Testing ‘Hosted’ GenAI Audio Summaries in Search

Google is testing podcast-like audio search summaries generated by AI. Audio Overviews uses Google’s latest Gemini models to generate “quick, conversational audio overviews for certain search queries.” It can be enabled through Google Labs, the company’s public-facing portal to AI experiments. An Audio Overview “can help you get a lay of the land, offering a convenient, hands-free way to absorb information,” Google says, noting that the feature displays search results “right within the audio player” to make it easy to delve further. Canvas and Live Video Add Productivity Features to Gemini AI

Google has added a Canvas feature to its Gemini AI chatbot that provides users with a real-time collaborative space where writing and coding projects can be refined and other ideas iterated and shared. “Canvas is designed for seamless collaboration with Gemini,” according to Gemini Product Director Dave Citron, who notes that Canvas makes it “an even more effective collaborator” in helping bring ideas to life. The move marks a trend whereby AI companies are trying to turn chatbot platforms into turnkey productivity suites. Google is launching a limited release of Gemini Live Video in addition to bringing its Audio Overview feature of NotebookLM to Gemini. Google Unveils New Updates to Its AI-Powered NotebookLM

Google has updated its AI assistant, NotebookLM, allowing the AI note-taking and research tool to find summaries of audio files and YouTube videos. First released at the Google I/O developer conference in 2023, NotebookLM even creates sharable AI-generated audio discussions and podcasts. It allows users to upload file formats including PDFs, Google Docs, Google Slides and websites. The items, including text, can be stored in shareable “notebooks,” organizing material in a central location, and users can ask Google’s Gemini AI questions about the notebook material.
