In its ongoing effort to strike the right balance between ad targeting and consumer data collection, Google Ads is introducing a new process it calls “confidential matching.” Relying on the hardware and software used for confidential computing in Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), Google says this new approach allows businesses to securely manage their first-party data. Canon EOS C80 Offers Full-Frame 6K Recording for Pro Video

Canon’s new EOS C80 is a professional full-frame 6K cinema camera designed for filmmakers that require a compact yet full-featured device. It is the company’s first cinema model with an RF mount. It also has a back-illuminated, stacked CMOS image sensor with triple-base ISO, which Canon says delivers “stunning imagery in a wide range of lighting conditions.” Base ISOs of 800, 3200 and 12,800 allow for full dynamic range. New to the EOS C line is 12G-SDI output, while Canon’s latest Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus — Dual Pixel AF II — has been added. The C80 also lets users choose from different autofocus frame sizes. Synamedia Reimagines TV Streaming with New Cloud Device

Senza is a connected TV app that parent Synamedia says can “transform the economics of reaching viewers” by offloading streaming controls from set-top boxes and dongles to the cloud. Synamedia claims Senza can reduce streaming costs by up to 90 percent while maintaining content security. The platform can be used to deliver to home TV screens as well as offsite locations such as bars, hotels and stadiums. “Senza moves the user experience from devices — such as connected TVs and streaming sticks — into the cloud and offers an HTML5 interface to quickly launch free, low-cost or premium services,” according to the company. Film Promotion Tool TikTok Spotlight Shares Audience Insight

TikTok has published an internal research study indicating the movie viewing habits of its users, and how advertisers can use the TikTok Spotlight movie marketing tool released last month. The promotional vehicle was designed to help TikTok users discover films, as well as influence their viewing choices and drive audiences to theaters. TikTok’s research found that 47 percent of TikTok users say that while on TikTok they discovered a new movie coming to theaters, and were “inspired to take action, including 36 percent purchasing a ticket,” which they can facilitate in-app through Spotlight. Alibaba’s Latest Vision Model Has Advanced Video Capability

China’s largest cloud computing company, Alibaba Cloud, has released a new computer vision model, Qwen2-VL, which the company says improves on its predecessor in visual understanding, including video comprehension and text-to-image processing in languages including English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Chinese and others. The company says it can analyze videos of more than 20 minutes in length and is able to respond appropriately to questions about content. Third-party benchmark tests compare Qwen2-VL favorably to leading competitors and the company is releasing two open-source versions with a larger private model to come. Viggle AI Raises $19 Million on the Power of Memes and More

Canadian generative video startup Viggle AI, which specializes in character motion, has raised $19 million in Series A funding. Viggle was founded in 2022 on the premise of providing a simplified process “to create lifelike animations using simple text-to-video or image-to-video prompts.” The result has been robust adoption among meme creators, with many viral videos circulating among social media platforms powered by Viggle, including one featuring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker mimicking the movements of rapper Lil Yachty. Viggle’s Discord community has four million members including “both novice and experienced animators,” according to the company. Tidal, AllTrack Team to Provide Songwriter Royalty Snapshots

Tidal — the music streaming service owned by Jack Dorsey’s Block payment processing company — is launching a royalty-tracking toolkit for songwriters. The new feature lets authors organize disparate publisher information in one place. “Songwriters juggle a mix of collection societies, publishing platforms, royalty management services, streaming services, and single-purpose apps to manage their royalties, careers, and catalog,” explains the company, which claims to be the first platform to serve songwriters “throughout the full writing career cycle.” Tidal has partnered with performing rights organization AllTrack to handle the backend. OSI Aims for Industry Standard by Defining ‘Open Source AI’

Creating a universal definition of “open source AI” has generated a fair amount of debate and confusion, with many outfits using elastic parameters in order to achieve a fit. Now the Open Source Initiative (OSI) — “the authority that defines Open Source” — has issued what it hopes will become the baseline definition. That definition, which includes the ability to “use the system for any purpose and without having to ask for permission,” excludes a lot of AI platforms that currently describe themselves as “open,” many freely available only for non-commercial use. SAG-AFTRA Strikes a Deal with Narrativ for AI Voice Replicas

SAG-AFTRA announced it is teaming with online talent marketplace Narrativ to provide the guild’s 160,000 members with the option of working with the New York-based AI startup to license their voice replicas for use in digital audio advertising. The deal would make it easy for voice actors to be considered for replicant work and get compensated, according to SAG-AFTRA, which emphasizes that performers will control the particulars, including whether to make their voices available, brand approval and fees. Story Raises $80M to Create Blockchain-Based IP Protection

Palo Alto-based startup PIP Labs announced an $80 million funding round for Story Protocol, a blockchain platform to track intellectual property rights in the era of artificial intelligence and the data scraping that enables model training. CEO and co-founder Seung Yoon “SY” Lee says the company aims to create a more sustainable IP environment for digital consumers and builders. The raise, led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Polychain Capital, values the startup at $2.25 billion. Sony Intros New 4K Camcorders with AI Subject Recognition

Sony Electronics is releasing two new 4K handheld camcorders. The NXCAM HXR-NX800 is aimed at consumer workflows, while the XDCAM PXW-Z200 is built for professional applications. Both models utilize artificial intelligence recognition capabilities, high-precision autofocus, 20x optical zoom, a variable neutral-density filter and assignable lens ring. The camcorders also feature Sony’s newest BIONZ XR image processors. “The cameras are suited to individuals and small teams” in the informational broadcast and educational fields, with a market debut planned for September. YouTube Expands Retail Relationship with Shopify in the U.S.

YouTube has expanded its relationship with Shopify, allowing more merchants to make their products available for creators to tag in their shopping content. All eligible Shopify Plus and Advanced merchants in the U.S. are now able to sign up for YouTube Shopping’s affiliate program through the Google & YouTube app on Shopify, which is expected to significantly increase the number of participating brands and products. According to YouTube, viewers watched over 30 billion hours of shopping-related videos in 2023. Broadening the scope of its Shopify deal is expected to make YouTube more competitive with TikTok Shop. Google Rolls Out Its Gemini Live, Challenging ChatGPT Voice

Google has released its AI assistant, Gemini Live, and is positioning it to replace Google Assistant on mobile. Gemini Live is rolling out on Android to subscribers of Gemini Advanced, which is part of the $20 monthly Google One AI Premium plan. Those consumers who purchase the new Pixel 9 Pro — which begins shipping this week — will get the assistant as part of a year of free access to Gemini Advanced, a $240 value, according to the company. Epic Launches App Store for iOS in the EU, Android Globally

The battle between Epic Games and Apple has arrived at a truce that finds the game maker’s massively popular “Fortnite” title back on iOS in the European Union, where Apple was pushed into the move by the competition-fostering Digital Markets Act. “Fortnite” is now available for iPhones there via the new Epic Games Store as well as the third-party outlet AltStore PAL. The launch comes after years of litigation between Epic and Apple in Europe and the U.S., where the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal, resulting in a decision Epic found less satisfactory than the EU outcome. xAI’s Grok-2 Generates Realistic Images with Few Guardrails

Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini, the latest generative chatbots from Elon Musk’s xAI, create images with seemingly few guardrails. Early pictures of notable personalities such as Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in questionable or compromising settings may not appear photorealistic to a trained eye, but they are still described in many cases to be quite realistic. Powered by the FLUX.1 AI model from Black Forest Labs, Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini are available in beta on X social for Premium and Premium+ subscribers and will be coming to xAI’s enterprise API later this month, according to the company.
