Alibaba Touts Advance in Open-Source AI with Qwen3 Series

China’s Alibaba Group has released a Qwen3 LLM series said to be at the leading edge of open-source models, nearly achieving the performance of proprietary models from AI competitors OpenAI and Google. Alibaba says Qwen3 offers improvements in reasoning, tool use, instruction following and multilingual abilities. The Qwen3 series features eight new models — two that are mixture-of-experts and six built on dense neural networks. Their sizes range from 600 million to 235 billion parameters. The size and scope of the Alibaba slate maintains China’s accelerated AI pace in the wake of DeepSeek’s game-changing debut. Adobe Unveils Two New Image Models and Array of Products

News from Adobe MAX London 2025 spanned new Firefly image models to a refreshed web app that includes third-party image generators, an AI agent that automates Photoshop, an updated Firefly mobile app coming soon to iOS and Android, and the Firefly Video model in general release. The latest release of Firefly “unifies AI-powered tools for image, video, audio, and vector generation into a single, cohesive platform and introduces many new capabilities,” according to Adobe, which says that since its debut nearly two years ago, creatives have used Firefly to generate more than 22 billion assets worldwide. Meta Brings ‘Blend’ Custom Video Feed Feature to Instagram

Meta Platforms has introduced a new Instagram Reels feature called Blend that lets users customize a video feed for themselves and friends. The invite-only Blends can be built for a single friend or within a group chat. Once created, the feed is refreshed each day with new content, with all members able to add material. The idea is to let friends explore and discover content together while adding a new interactive element that harkens back to social media’s roots, cutting through the recent trend of viral influencer content and ads. LG and Zenapse Partner on Emotionally Intelligent Advertising

LG has partnered with AI startup Zenapse and will leverage its proprietary large emotion model (LEM) to power advertising that reflects viewers’ moods and emotions. Building on Zenapse’s “emotional AI and psychographic targeting,” the companies say they will “redefine viewer engagement, personalization, and campaign performance” by applying the technology to LG Ad Solutions’ advanced connected TV platform. OpenAI Introduces New Models That Can Reason with Images

OpenAI has released two new AI models that use images as part of their reasoning process, “thinking with images.” OpenAI o3 and o4-mini “are the smartest models we’ve released to date, representing a step change in ChatGPT’s capabilities for everyone from curious users to advanced researchers,” the company says. Agentic AI company Moveworks has opened an AI Agent Marketplace that launches with more than 100 pre-built agents, enabling users to discover, install, and deploy AI assistants that automate business processes. Agentic AI is booming, as businesses seek to offload tasks from human workers to software. Anthropic Adds Deep Research, Google Integration to Claude

Anthropic has upgraded its AI assistant Claude, adding Research, an autonomous capability that integrates with Google Workspace. Claude can now search and reference content in Google Docs as well as communications in Gmail and events in Calendar. “With Research, Claude can search across both your internal work context and the web to help you make decisions and take action faster than before,” Anthropic explains, turning the model into a “true virtual collaborator” for enterprise clients. The expansion puts Anthropic into more direct competition with OpenAI and Microsoft as well as Google with Gemini in the AI productivity space. TikTok Challenger Neptune Lets Users Hide Likes, Followers

Neptune is a new social video app aiming to compete in the short-form space against stalwarts like TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Currently in beta with a test base of about 1,000 users, Neptune has amassed a waitlist of 400,000, according to the company. The app’s noteworthy features include the ability to hide likes and follower counts, in furtherance of a desire to prioritize creativity over competition. Google has turned its Firebase backend-as-a-service (BaaS) platform into a full-stack AI workspace called Firebase Studio that builds custom apps in a browser-based environment. Available to anyone with a Google account during its preview phase, Google says Firebase Studio will be useful to beginners and pros alike, with Gemini-powered AI agents that can be used to automate the process of building, launching and monitoring mobile and web apps and related infrastructure. Adobe introduced new versions of Premiere Pro and After Effects at the 2025 NAB Show. For the first time, Adobe’s Premiere Pro editing software gets Firefly generative AI powers. Generative Extend lets users elongate scenes by generating a few extra frames at 4K in the Premiere Pro app, which also gains New Media Intelligence to help find the right clip in seconds. There is also drag-and-drop color management and automatic caption translation to over 27 languages. Blackmagic Adds AI-Powered Features to DaVinci Resolve 20

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 20 in public beta, touting 100 AI-centric improvements that aim to save time in a workflow. Among them is AI IntelliScript, which automatically generates a timeline using the transcribed audio in media clips and matching it to the script. From that, it constructs “a timeline of the best selected takes, with any alternative takes placed on additional tracks for editor review,” Blackmagic says. Midjourney Launches V7 Image Generator with Voice Prompts

Generative AI program Midjourney has issued V7 in alpha, marking its first new model in almost a year. Notable updates include personalization turned on by default, which users must first set up — a process Midjourney says takes 5 minutes — and can then toggle on or off at any time. Another new flagship feature, Draft Mode, lets users render lower resolution images at “half the cost and 10 times the speed,” according to Midjourney, emphasizing “it’s so fast that we change the prompt bar to a ‘conversational mode’ when you’re using it on Web.” Draft Mode also supports voice prompts. Vimeo is launching Vimeo Streaming, a turnkey platform that allows businesses, creators, and just about anyone to create and monetize their own branded streaming service. The announcement was timed to the 2025 NAB Show. Vimeo suggests the new offering — described as “a technological leap forward for content and media businesses” — is the next generation of its existing over-the-top product that is already helping creators earn $429 million per month. Nintendo Switch 2 Out in June with 4K Support, In-Game Chat

Gamers have been waiting for years for Nintendo’s new gaming device and now they only have to wait until June 5 when the Switch 2 hits shelves starting at $450. The device has a larger, 1080p LCD screen, and supports 4K and in-game chat. Details were revealed during a Nintendo Direct online presentation. Nintendo, which announced details of the new console in January, will over the next few months be holding a series of global roadshow events aimed at letting people have a hands-on experience with Switch 2. OpenAI Closes the Largest Private Tech Funding Round Ever

OpenAI has closed a $40 billion funding round, a record for a private tech firm. The infusion gives the nine-year-old San Francisco startup a $300 billion valuation making it the second most richly apprised private firm in the world, second only to SpaceX at $350 billion and tied with ByteDance, according to CNBC. The round was led by SoftBank Group contributing $30 billion, which likely gives the Japanese holding company the second largest stake, after Microsoft, which is said to have received a commitment for 49 percent of any profits in exchange for nearly $14 billion.
